Overview The Correctional Officer 2 carries out the average difficulty correctional work at a state penal institution, responsible for the custody, transport, and rehabilitation of inmates on any shift.

Qualifications Education & Experience:

High school graduation or equivalent. At least 1 year full‑time adult correctional security work, or qualification substituted by full‑time employment as a Correctional Officer with the State of Tennessee on a year‑for‑year basis.

Willing and able to qualify with, carry, and use assigned weapons

Minimum age 18 on application date

U.S. citizen

Good moral character, as determined by investigation

Completed criminal history disclosure and release records

Provided fingerprint sample per TBI prescription

No felony convictions or required discharge

Pass physical examination (ADA compliant)

Pass psychological evaluation (ADA compliant)

Pass pre‑employment drug screening

Valid driver’s license if required

Complete course at Tennessee Correction Academy after appointment

Responsibilities

Supervise inmate activities in housing units, dining areas, recreation, work areas; attend to medical, visitation, personal property needs.

Inspect and patrol grounds for contraband, unauthorized personnel, and other security risks.

Check in new inmates: assign accommodations, search for contraband, issue clothing, store personal property.

Observe inmate behavior; counsel inmates and families; evaluate hygiene, attitudes, and report to counseling department.

Attend staff meetings, disciplinary boards, training on riot control, escape prevention, and first aid.

Prepare daily logs, disciplinary reports, inmate job and pay records, daily counts, and requisitions.

Operate equipment: two‑way radios, firearms, mace, electronic gates, TV cameras; operate motor vehicles.

Ensure safety of residents through supervision of daily activity.

Break up fights or other dangerous situations by persuasion or physical force.

Explain and enforce existing policies and procedures to others.
