Location:
Department of Correction, Northeast Correctional Complex, Johnson County, Tennessee – 4 positions.
Salary:
$4,480; 6‑month increase to $4,592; 12‑month increase $4,937; 18‑month increase $5,060.
Sign‑on bonus:
$5,000 payable over 18 months. Requires criminal background check.
Job Overview The Correctional Officer 2 is responsible for correctional work of average difficulty, handling custody, transport, rehabilitation, supervising inmates, and ensuring safety in state penal institutions.
Responsibilities
Supervise inmate activities in housing units, dining areas, recreation, and work areas; attend to medical, visitation, personal property, and recreational needs.
Inspect and patrol grounds for contraband, unauthorized personnel, and security risks.
Check in new inmates—assign accommodations, search for contraband, issue clothing, store personal property.
Observe inmate behavior; counsel inmates and families; evaluate hygiene, attitude, and report to counseling.
Attend staff meetings, disciplinary board meetings, and training for riot control, escape prevention, and first aid.
Prepare reports: daily logs, disciplinary reports, inmate job/pay records, daily counts, requisitions.
Operate equipment (radios, firearms, mace, gates, cameras) and motor vehicles as required.
Ensure safety by supervising daily activities; break up fights or dangerous situations.
Explain and enforce policies and procedures.
Qualifications Education & Experience:
High‑school graduate; one year full‑time adult correctional security work or equivalent experience in a recognized agency. State correctional officer employment may substitute for the education requirement.
Special Qualifications:
Willing and able to qualify with, carry, and use assigned weapons.
At least 18 years old.
U.S. citizen.
Good moral character through investigation.
Complete criminal history disclosure and consent release of records.
Provide fingerprint sample for criminal history check.
No felony convictions or discharged under non‑honorable conditions.
Pass a physical exam meeting ADA requirements.
Pass a psychological evaluation meeting ADA requirements.
Pass pre‑employment drug screening.
Possess a valid driver’s license for some positions.
Complete required course at Tennessee Correction Academy upon appointment.
