Basic Function
The incumbent, under the direction of the Vehicle Fleet Manager, will oversee maintenance activities on buses, trucks, and other vehicles as assigned. Duties will involve preventive maintenance, overhaul, troubleshooting, parts and inventory purchase and proper documentation of work activities. Incumbent will also be responsible in the planning, directing, coordinating and evaluating employee and shop performance. Assist with maintenance of replacement schedule for the vehicle equipment replacement reserve. Salary:

Executes and enforces policies, procedures and standards, establishes schedules and priorities for equipment service, maintenance and repair. Determines specific work assignments for maintenance staff. Responsible for the day-to-day direction of Vehicle Fleet Maintenance employees, including but not limited to hiring, training, discipline, issuing department memorandums and employee evaluations; assure that subordinate staff receive appropriate direction to effectively perform assigned work duties. Assign, monitor, evaluate and provide professional and technical guidance to staff. Orders repair parts, operating shop supplies and fuel. Keeps inventory issues, prepares shop work orders, time sheets, equipment service records and vehicle maintenance records. Keeps daily records and prepares regular and periodic reports. Responsible for establishing and maintaining accurate and complete maintenance records. Schedules and supervises service, maintenance and repair of borough equipment. Establishes preventative maintenance schedules and is responsible for efficient maintenance assigned to an area. Inspects and supervises maintenance of shop tools, and equipment; prepares cost estimates, material and manpower estimates; delivery schedules; and conducts safety meetings. Supervises and may performs preventive maintenance and general repair work on buses, trucks, fire trucks, ambulances, and other vehicles as assigned, through inspection, adjustment and replacement of parts to ensure the effective functioning of the vehicle. Performs diagnostic problem-solving on buses, trucks, and other vehicles. Maintains a safe and clean work area. Serves as backup facility manager for both the Transportation Maintenance Facility and the Max C. Lyon Jr. Transit center. Position Requirements
Minimum Qualifications Six (6) years of demonstrated work experience in the maintenance or repair of diesel and gasoline powered equipment; four of the six years must be recent experience. Prefer three (3) years recent supervisory experience in a maintenance shop environment, to include scheduling prioritizing and assigning of work. Demonstrated experience in the field of motor coaches preferred. Demonstrated experience with bus maintenance or repair experience preferred. Demonstrated knowledge and experience with diesel engines and transmissions. Preference will be given for demonstrated experience with electronic computerized powertrain components. Must possess basic computer skills, with the ability to perform date entry functions. Experience with MS Word and Excel required. Demonstrated ability in operating computer maintenance programs. Within eighteen (18) months of hire, must be able to complete specialized fire apparatus maintenance training. Must have and be able to maintain a valid commercial driver’s license. Must meet insurance standards and maintain insurability under the Borough's insurance program. If personal automobile is used for Borough business, proof of automobile insurance at statutory limits must be provided. (A CURRENT COPY OF DRIVING RECORD WILL BE REQUIRED UPON REQUEST.) Must provide and maintain hand tools for performance of maintenance activities. Knowledge of the tools, equipment and technology used in the repair and maintenance of buses, trucks, and other motorized vehicles. Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the mechanical trade. Ability to read, comprehend and apply technical instructions in repair manuals, manufacturers’ specifications, and quality standards established by the Division. To perform and assign maintenance work on all vehicles (heavy duty and light duty) and record proper documentation of all work activities. Work having the most disagreeable extremes of heat, cold, noise, fumes, etc. which are continuous and expose the employee to combinations of elements and facts where there is major accident/hazard risk; up to 1/2 of time is spent standing, performs position in an abnormal sitting or standing position; requires crouching, stooping, stretching, bending and twisting; requires sustained periods of heavy lifting, pushing or pulling (50+ lbs.).
