Basic Function
Perform routine servicing and cleaning functions on vehicles and related equipment. Includes bus cleaning, fueling (including offsite fueling), fluid level maintenance, and may be required to drive transit bus or other transportation vehicle in emergency situations.
Position Requirements Reports to: Transportation Maintenance Supervisor
Salary: Grade 56

Typical Duties
Perform routine and preventative servicing on Borough vehicles: fueling, maintaining fluid levels (engine oil, radiators, transmissions, etc.), changing oil and other fluids, checking tire pressures, changing tires, changing lights, bleeding air tanks, and other similar tasks.
Cleans vehicles (inside and outside), including windows, seats, dash panels, and floor.
Operate all vehicles in fleet, ranging from passenger cars to large passenger buses. Operate a forklift and perform warehouse functions.
On a back‑up basis, fill‑in driver functions in emergency situations as required.
Keep track of all maintenance related actions by logging entries in the proper records. Perform dispatch functions for drivers during non‑staffed periods.
Assist mechanics in non‑technical shop functions and fill‑in as mechanics helper as needed.
Perform minor facility maintenance. On a back‑up basis, may perform other cleaning such as restrooms, fixtures, vacuuming, etc., and janitorial duties in the garage, facilities, and grounds, to include cleaning floors, trash collection, snow removal, and bus shelter maintenance and cleaning.
Secure the property by locking doors and gates. Assure the building and grounds are secure at the end of each shift.
Contact the appropriate person in event of an incident which requires the decision of a supervisor.
Minimum Qualifications
High school Diploma or equivalent.
Must have a valid Alaska State Driver's License and a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with passenger and air brake endorsements. Must meet insurance standards and maintain insurability under the Borough's insurance program. (A current copy of driving record will be required upon request.)
One (1) year automotive experience in servicing various types of vehicles/equipment. Demonstrated working knowledge of minor vehicle maintenance and servicing (prefer experience with buses or heavy equipment).
Must have or be able to obtain a "Certified Forklift Driver" card within six (6) months of hire. Must have or be able to obtain a class "C" UST (Underground Storage Tank) certification within six (6) months of hire.
Specific training or experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the work.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
Ability to read, comprehend, and follow verbal and written instructions.
Ability to record activities and figures legibly into record books.
Physical strength and agility to perform the work including removing and changing tires and preventative maintenance tasks.
Ability to safely operate mechanical equipment, lifts, tools, etc.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, and others.

Must have (or be able to obtain within 90 days of employment) and maintain a DOT Medical Examiners Certificate.
May be required to possess hand tools common to the industry.
This position requires a criminal background check.

Work Environment: Performs duties in a variety of conditions, generally unpleasant areas with undesirable elements or factors on a somewhat continuous basis; minor accident/hazard risk; requires sustained periods of lifting, crouching, stooping or stretching (25+ lbs.). While serving as driver, there is a major accident/hazard risk and disagreeable conditions on a somewhat continuous basis; requires short periods of moderate lifting, pushing or pulling (26‑50 lbs).
This position falls under the Borough’s Blood Borne Pathogen (BBP) Exposure Control Program as it is reasonably anticipated that infrequent exposure to blood or other bodily fluids may occur while performing some job duties.
