Overview LRE (Leeward Renewable Energy) is a high-growth renewable energy company forging a sustainable future through integrity, innovation, and positive impact. We own and operate 30 large wind, solar, and energy storage projects across the United States, totaling over 3 gigawatts (GW) of generating capacity. LRE aims for 10 GW of operating assets by 2028 and develops and contracts an increasing pipeline of new projects each year. Job Summary The Project Development Engineer is responsible for the engineering and technical aspects of wind, solar, and energy storage utility-scale projects during the development phase. This role performs engineering due diligence and preliminary design work to evaluate and support projects, optimize them for market readiness, and maintain quality aligned with LRE’s long-term ownership approach. The role emphasizes collaboration and proactive risk management to inform the LRE pipeline and set the stage for future project success.
Key Responsibilities
Conduct desktop site assessments to inform project capacity and energy as well as engineering and constructability risks
Prepare or manage preliminary site layouts
Provide energy prediction reports in coordination with the performance team
Collaborate with the engineering team to assess deliverable needs including site surveys, geotechnical, hydrology, grading and drainage, and preliminary collection, substation, civil, and structural designs
Provide engineering/technical input to permitting, power purchase agreements, interconnect agreements, financial modeling, and other project development aspects
Prepare engineering quantities and information for project budgets and schedules
Represent LRE in development, permitting and origination meetings on engineering and technical issues with the public and regulatory authorities
Lead multiple projects simultaneously and manage competing priorities to meet submittal dates
Gather engineering scopes, exhibits, and site design criteria for RFPs
Review designs and calculations for quality control, performance optimization, and cost reduction opportunities
Meet with external consultants and contractors to discuss design options, address concerns, and support contract negotiations
Conduct site visits for site evaluations
Assist in creating and reviewing site constraint maps
Work with procurement and performance teams to stay current on wind turbine, solar module, solar inverter, and energy storage technology and suppliers
Contribute to engineering standard creation
Coordinate with subject matter experts to identify long-lead procurement items needed to support project schedules
Maintain accurate project documentation and keep stakeholders informed of progress
Transfer engineering knowledge and risks to the project engineer on the execution team during the pre-construction phase
Guide and train junior level engineers
Required Qualifications
4-year Bachelor's degree in Engineering
6–9 years of relevant technical experience; renewable power generation preferred
Ability to learn quickly
Ownership and oversight of projects and tasks with complex issues
Proficiency in AutoCAD, PVsyst, PlantPredict, Openwind, and other layout/optimization tools
Understanding of project development and permitting processes
Basic knowledge of project commercial issues and project financial analysis
Strong project management skills
Proficiency in engineering economics and optimization processes
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Organized with ability to oversee multiple development projects simultaneously
Professional interpersonal skills; ability to interact with people at all levels, including customers and vendors
Proficient use of Microsoft Office Suite
Ability to manage priorities in a complex and dynamic environment
Prior experience in the renewable energy industry; desirable project experience in development, permitting, design, scheduling, cost estimating, procurement, and contracts
Ability to read and interpret technical documentation and drawings
Ability to lead projects with minimal supervision
Know when to escalate issues and obtain resolutions
Strong knowledge of power project engineering
Valid driver's license and ability to operate a motor vehicle
Preferred Qualifications
Deep technical knowledge of PV, wind, and storage power plant systems
Strong knowledge of procurement and construction processes and procedures
Familiarity with building codes and standards including the IBC, ASCE 7, and NEC
PE license
Reporting Structure The Project Development Engineer reports to the Director of Project Engineering within the Project Construction Management Organization.
Physical Demands
Sitting for long periods
Occasionally lifting up to 20 pounds
Travel up to 25% of the time
