The Facilities Supervisor position leads a team of groundskeepers which perform grounds maintenance jobs at assigned various Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) campus locations in efforts to keep SLCC campus grounds safe and beautiful throughout the year, including turf maintenance, application of pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers, plant and tree knowledge, and irrigation.
This is an important position to the college because all duties performed are visible and contribute greatly to the environment and overall appeal at each campus. The position will assist the Grounds Manager in personnel decisions, operational oversight, and other areas as needed. Directs the work of full-time and part-time staff.
Requires moderate physical effort to perform a variety of gardening maintenance duties including watering grass, flowers, and shrubs, transplant/planting sod, flowers, shrubs, and trees, weeding flower and shrub beds, prune shrubs and trees, weeding, litter removal, and general equipment maintenance.
Position has a regular schedule but requires flexibility and must be available to work on call for snow removal and sprinkler system emergencies, 24 hours a day 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Position will be required to work under various, and sometimes severe weather conditions ranging from extreme heat and cold, to rain, and snow.
This position is considered an advanced groundskeeper or supervisory level position but will also be expected to perform all duties of groundskeeper positions as needed.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Maintain turf and equipment (i.e., mowing, edging, trimming, and aerating).
Maintain Athletic field to include seeding, fertilizing, mowing, and striping soccer and baseball/softball fields.
Maintain irrigation systems for proper water distribution to various landscapes including installation, maintenance, repair, programming, troubleshooting, etc.
Supervise oversight of employee work, making assignment, performance management, time clock approval, and oversight of Sprocket orders.
Assist the Grounds Manager with other duties as necessary.
Maintain grounds (i.e., greenhouse, turf, and garden areas).
Fertilizing, applying herbicides/pesticides, watering grass, flowers, and shrubs.
Transplanting/planting sod, flowers, shrubs, and tress, weeding flower and shrub beds, pruning shrubs and trees, weeding, and litter removal.
General equipment maintenance.
Remove snow and ice on a 24 hour/365 day on call basis at SLCC campus locations.
Areas include parking lots, sidewalks, handicap ramps, and roadways.
Apply ice melt in designated locations.
Operate and maintain equipment associated with snow removal job duties.
Perform sprinkler emergency repair work on a 24-hour 365 day on call bases at SLCC Campus locations.
Open, complete, and close out work orders in the Sprocket system.
Enter time worked and materials ordered.
Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge Skills & Abilities
Supervisory and team management skills including the ability to effectively assist in the hiring/termination process, train incoming staff on College policy, general Grounds procedures, and Grounds duties (semi-skilled manual labor).
Demonstrate effective teamwork with all staff.
Knowledge of and ability to use turf maintenance equipment (i.e., driving mower, hand mowers, edgers, leaf blowers, weed eaters, and line trimmers, etc.).
Ability to safely operate tractors, backhoes, forklifts, snowplows, and other equipment. Equipment maintenance skills to include the following: proper fueling procedures, cleaning equipment, and ensuring equipment is functioning properly.
Demonstrated proper use of hooking up, unhooking, and safe towing of trailers (moving forward and in reverse) on low speed and regular vehicles.
Advanced landscape irrigation systems skills. Knowledge and skills conducting water audits to determine distribution uniformity, precipitation rates, and providing recommendations for improvement.
Ability to use a sprinkler clock and start an irrigation station from a computer and program the schedule and clocks.
Knowledge of pump operation.
Ability to appropriately use fertilizer injector and conduct winterization on all irrigation systems.
Working knowledge of Maxicom irrigation systems.
Knowledge of garden preparation and design.
Ability to apply proper techniques to maintain flowerbeds, shrubs and trees on college campuses including planting, weeding, and advanced pruning techniques.
Knowledge of various kinds of plants and weeds and ability to identify them and train others.
Advanced design principles, maintenance, and prep work for turf area(s).
Ability to apply aeration techniques. Ability to appropriately calculate application rate for fertilizer based on soil tests, appropriately calculate application rate for herbicide in turf and properly apply to turf and appropriately calculate application rate for pesticide as needed to control unwanted pests such as insects, arachnids, and rodents.
Knowledge of advanced greenhouse care with ability to manage greenhouse.
Snow removal skills and ability involving motorized equipment and snow shovels.
Computer and data entry skills. Basic MS Office knowledge. Ability to navigate the Internet.
Knowledge of Sprocket work order system and ability to enter time worked, opening and closing work orders, completing work orders, as well as ordering materials as needed.
Ensure that subordinates complete their assigned tasks on time and according to best practice.
Ability to use the timecard system to approve time as needed.
Ability to complete all College required training courses.
Ability to complete low speed vehicle training.
Ability to lift 50 lbs. on a regular basis.
Ability to work from a ladder.
Ability to perform equipment maintenance tasks.
Receive and follow verbal/written instructions.
Ability to read and understand MSDS labeling requirements.
Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of people with a variety of abilities and backgrounds, to maintain good working relationships across the College.
Ability to work with all groups from a variety of academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, and with community college students, faculty, and staff, including those with disabilities.
Qualifications
Associate's degree.
Two (2) to four (4) years direct, paid, full-time work experience required.
Trade off 1:1 in experience/education requirement. (Education may be substituted one-to-one with full-time work experience).
Must have a valid Utah driver license to operate some equipment.
Must have or have the ability to obtain forklift certification within six (6) months of start date.
Herbicide and pesticide application licenses required within six (6) months.
Must complete Master Gardner program within one (1) year of start date.
