Geva Theatre, a LORT B regional theatre in the heart of Rochester, New York, seeks an experienced and collaborative Stage Operations Supervisor to join its production team.
The Stage Operations Supervisor is responsible for facilitating the smooth running of shows, hiring and supervising backstage crews, and maintaining the backstage and onstage areas and equipment. Also responsible for Geva’s core values of artistic courage, sustainability, excellence, boundless hospitality, empathy, and anti-racism and inclusion.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITY
Leadership & Supervision Manage and support the backstage personnel to promote a safe, healthy, and productive working environment. Monitor safety procedures and the safe operation of tools and equipment. With the Production Manager, coordinate with scenic and prop departments, as well as stage management to develop plans for handling scenery and props during performances for each production. Consult with other departments to determine desired effects, transitions, storage, and other performance-related tasks. With Production Manager, determine needs and hire backstage crew for each production. Assign tasks to backstage crew during technical rehearsals, determine schedules for backstage crew. Maintain relationships with local freelance crew members. Train and onboard new backstage crew members. Troubleshoot, touch-up and repair scenic elements, stage machinery, and props as needed during checks and performances. Assist or lead rigging and stage automation as needed per production. ADMINISTRATION
Attend weekly production staff meetings, production meetings, load-in and strike meetings, and technical rehearsal meetings as required. TRAITS IN A SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE
Demonstrated leadership experience in similarly scaled, related positions, or a combination of education and experience providing equivalent knowledge. Experience in leadership, teamwork, and management principles for a diverse staff. Demonstrated knowledge of a wide variety of tools and techniques to repair scenic elements. Knowledge of basic rigging and theatrical automation to use in technical designs. Ability to delegate tasks to others in order to keep the flow of work moving forward at an efficient rate. Ability to lead and/or supervise crews of carpenters to get work done efficiently and safely. Knowledge of safety procedures to maintain a safe working environment. Basic computer skills in Word, Excel, and the Internet as needed for research on tools, materials, and procedures. Effective communication skills for asking informed questions and presenting research information. Ability to handle significant responsibility with little or no supervisor while displaying consistent expertise. Ability to take an active leadership role in setting and maintain the levels of production craftsmanship and artistic excellence. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to crouch, twist, turn, bend, stoop, climb stairs and ladders, stand and sit for extended periods of time, reach above, below and at neck level, have full range of neck motion, see near and far with good depth perception, and work indoors and outdoors. Ability to lift and carry 60 lbs.
