Job Responsibilities

At Sumter Maintenance, assists the Resident Maintenance Engineer (RME) in supervising the encroachment permit process.

Reviews permits prior to submitting to the RME and/or District for approval.

Supervises permit technicians.

Trains permit technicians on the EPPS Permit System.

Assists the RME in supervising contractors and local municipalities working under encroachment permits and purchase orders.

Assists with the management of maintenance activities, including guardrail repair and installation, chip seal, resurfacing, full‑depth patching, pavement markings, vegetation management, and more.

Gathers data for projects and prepares specifications and submittal packages.

Oversees existing permit work for QA/QC, erosion control, and traffic control.

Assists the RME with responses to the SCDOT web page and investigations of damage claims.

Supports non‑federal and federal aid route resurfacing and assists Sumter Construction in developing estimates for planned work.

Provides assistance during inclement weather.

Serves as an assistant to the shift supervisor to maintain activity records and coordinate crews and equipment.

Minimum And Additional Requirements

A bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or Construction Science and Management; or an approved equivalent.

A valid motor vehicle operator's license is required.

The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve sitting or standing for extended periods of time. The position may require travel and may require bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, driving, walking on uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motorized traffic. Workers may be exposed to outside environmental hazards and noise. This position may also require working outside of the normal schedule during inclement weather or emergencies.

Additional Comments May be required to work overtime, nighttime, and/or weekends during hazardous weather or emergencies.
