The Litigation Paralegal/Legal Assistant hybrid is responsible for assisting attorneys in the law firm by performing research, organizing information and preparing legal arguments. They may perform any task an attorney normally does except those that constitute the unauthorized practice of law (i.e., represent/advise clients, sign documents). Interfaces with and represents attorneys to clients and others. Works under general supervision with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. This position may also be responsible for administrative support such as document creation, calendar management and meeting coordination. Primary Responsibilities Include
Conduct research on relevant elements of aspects of cases including laws, regulations, legal articles and individuals in relation to case strategy and investigation of facts Keep information related to cases or transactions in electronic document management system Write reports to help lawyers prepare for trials Draft correspondence and other documents, such as contracts Obtain affidavits and other formal statements that may be used as evidence in court Gather pertinent reports related to the plaintiff or defense. Records may include records of medical treatment, driving records, financial records, etc. Calendar notable dates related to active cases This position requires a minimum of two (2) years’ experience as a paralegal and a minimum of five (5) years’ in the Legal field. Duties include drafting and research. Preparing correspondence and legal papers such as summonses, complaints, motions, responses and subpoenas under the supervision of an attorney. Conservation of attorneys’ time by reading, researching, reviewing, verifying and routing correspondence, reports and legal documents; drafting letters and documents; collecting and analyzing information; initiating telecommunications; organizing client conferences and attorney meetings; scheduling couriers, court reporters, expert witnesses and other special functions; coordinating preparation of charts, graphs and other courtroom visuals; and preparing expense reports. Managing attorney calendar by planning and scheduling conferences, teleconferences, depositions and travel; recording and monitoring court appearance dates, pleadings and filing requirements; monitoring evidence-gathering; anticipating changes in litigation or transaction preparation requirements. Generating revenues by documenting and inputting billable time and reimbursable expenses; preparing invoices; tracking payments. Maintaining hard copy and electronic filing system according to practice group needs and law firm standards. Demonstrating a high degree of confidentiality in activities. Maintains client confidence by keeping client/attorney information confidential. This position is a full time, non-exempt position and may require periodic overtime and flexible schedule in support of case deadlines.
