Job Overview 12‑month position, grant funded, applicable to Grades P‑11.
The Dean of Students provides administrative support managing student conduct and behavior to foster and maintain a positive school culture that promotes student growth and positive development. The role involves attendance, discipline, safety, and related student personnel services, performed within the authority delegated by the principal.
Responsibilities
Collaborate with school stakeholders to establish and promote positive school cultures grounded in restorative practices.
Provide targeted interventions to students in the areas of behavior and conduct through a restorative lens.
Identify students with attendance and/or disciplinary issues and resolve those issues with counselors, parents, and social workers.
Implement discipline in alignment with the APS Code of Conduct using restorative practices.
Investigate and resolve discipline problems fairly in conjunction with assistant principals and the principal.
Investigate student complaints and grievances.
Adjudicate minor infractions through progressive discipline such as detentions, classroom referrals, Saturday detention, in‑school suspension, out‑of‑school suspension, etc.
Re‑enter students upon completion of out‑of‑school suspensions, facilitate re‑entry meetings, and provide Peer Mediation to resolve conflicts.
Maintain disciplinary records required by policy, regulation, law, or good practice.
Present the school’s case in due process proceedings for suspension and expulsion.
Conduct frequent walkthroughs to promote positive behavior and a safe/orderly environment.
Oversee student attendance matters with assistant principals and the principal.
Collaborate with Student Services teams to make appropriate referrals for testing, guidance, or counseling.
Recommend revisions of and assist in interpreting programs, policies, and procedures affecting student climate and culture.
Help manage daily campus operations, including safety and security tasks, emergency drills, arrival/dismissal procedures, cafeteria duty, and evening activities.
Coordinate with school security staff and officers to ensure timely class transitions and overall safety.
Maintain communication with families, community, law enforcement, and judicial systems.
Work with community and government agencies on drug abuse and truancy issues.
Assist with evaluation of school support staff and perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Master’s Degree in Education or related field.
At least five years of K‑12 school division experience (grades 9‑12 preferred).
Demonstrated competencies to assess and manage student behavior.
Experience developing and implementing school‑wide behavior management programs (PBIS, Restorative Practices).
Postgraduate Professional License with an endorsement in administration and supervision (Virginia State Board of Education) or eligibility.
Bilingual skills preferred, experience working with diverse families preferred.
Knowledge of APS policies, VDOE, VAC, DOE, and Virginia School Discipline Laws.
Ability to review, recommend, and implement policies on restorative practices and progressive discipline.
Skill in data interpretation, project coordination, problem solving, written and oral communication, interpersonal skills, and computer proficiency (Microsoft Office, Excel, PowerPoint).
