Overview

Gaston Social Services protects, cares for, and empowers children and adults who are temporarily or permanently unable to care for themselves through administration of federal, state, and county programs focused on improving well-being. An hourly salary range of $30.43 to $35.37 is anticipated for this position. The duties listed below are considered essential for a worker to perform and are not all that may be assigned. Responsibilities

Work a night duty schedule including nights, weekends, and holidays. Provide for constant coverage of the Child Abuse Hotline by responding timely to callers. Gather, explore, document, interpret, evaluate, and staff information from reporters of child protective services issues via telephone, office visits, mail, and e-mails. Make recommendations to superiors on whether information meets North Carolina statutory definitions and policy guidance around abuse, neglect, and dependency of children. Conduct responsibilities in a timely, time-sensitive manner to initiate accepted Child Protective Services Reports within required timeframes. Evaluate needs, refer to helping agencies, and assess appropriateness for DHHS interventions. Assess reports of abuse, neglect, or dependency of children using a forensic investigative assessment approach or a family assessment approach, as dictated by severity and in accordance with state law and policy. Review existing DSS documentation and staff response with the Supervisor. Initiate comprehensive CPS reports including interviews with victims, caretakers, household members, and relevant collaterals. Collaborate with law enforcement and prosecutors on joint investigations. Follow mandated timeframes and procedures for initiation and ongoing assessment. Observe home structure and environment to ensure basic needs can be met. Complete safety assessments and other tools with the family to promote transparency. When necessary, explore alternative safety resource placement options. Engage the family in planning for safety and well-being, incorporating input from law enforcement, medical personnel, mental health professionals, and others as needed to determine safety measures. Complete referrals from daytime staff after hours by responding to and completing requested activities for Child Protective Services and Foster Care cases. Respond to emergencies outside of office hours. Invoke court action when children cannot be safe in their homes, seek direction through legal consultation, and complete/filing of all necessary court paperwork. Accompany law enforcement in taking physical custody of children. Participate in forensic joint interviews at the local Child Advocacy Center with law enforcement and other professionals as appropriate. Participate weekly in unit/team staffing, present completed case assessments for decision-making, and seek supervisor guidance as needed. Document all activities, contacts, dates, and times using a structured documentation tool. Request necessary supporting documentation from external sources and place it in the case file. Participate in local, state-m mandated trainings. Attend monthly multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings to discuss cases. Attend quarterly internal meetings with assessors to discuss policy changes and service needs. Must be available to work mandatory emergency shelters and other duties as assigned. Qualifications

MSW from an accredited school of social work. Bachelor's degree from an accredited school of social work and completion of the Child Welfare Collaborative (Child Welfare positions only). BSW and one year of experience in case management, assessment, referral, supportive counseling, intervention, psychosocial therapy, or treatment planning. BSW and completion of the Child Welfare Collaborative and one year of directly-related experience (Child Welfare positions only). Bachelor\u2019s degree in a human services field with at least 25 semester hours of approved coursework and two years of related experience. Bachelor\u2019s degree from a four-year college or university and three years of directly related experience. A valid driver\u2019s license is required. Requires the ability to work with families in intense, personal situations and represent the authority of DSS while engaging them as a helping agency. Ability to balance safety needs for children with empowering families to recognize community supports. Knowledge of MRS strategies and outcomes of the system of care, good child development knowledge, excellent communication skills, and family-centered practice are helpful. A copy of a transcript must be included with the application.

Failure to attach transcripts will result in rejection. The applicant selected must undergo a criminal background check and pass a drug screening prior to employment. In compliance with G.S. 160A-164.2(b), for positions involving work with children, the County must require a criminal history record check conducted by the SBI as described by G.S. 143B-1209.26.
