Position Summary Caltrans Environmental Scientists perform a broad range of work concerning environmental issues related to transportation projects. Incumbents conduct field analyses; prepare environmental documents, technical studies, permitting packages, and regulatory permits; ensure compliance with environmental laws and regulations; and conduct environmental protection, planning, and mitigation activities. They apply scientific methods to analyze data on the effects of transportation projects on the environment; prepare and review CEQA/NEPA and other technical documents to determine effects; and implement mitigation strategies to lessen project impacts.

Under the general direction of the Environmental Branch Chief, the Senior Environmental Scientist (Specialist) participates as an interdisciplinary team member responsible for archaeological and/or architectural and historic studies and project effects analysis for transportation projects and local assistance projects under Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act and other applicable regulations.

Responsibilities

Identify and evaluate archaeological, architectural, and/or other historic built environment resources as part of the transportation project development process.

Prepare written analyses or reports on these resources; identify and analyze impacts of transportation projects on such resources; develop and recommend mitigation measures to avoid or minimize impacts.

Serve as a lead or mentor on specific projects or programs; provide guidance to other staff and may act as a consultant to other agencies.

The Senior Environmental Scientist (Specialist) is an advanced journey-level position with higher consequence of error. Incumbents may be assigned lead responsibilities and may mentor lower-level staff.

Minimum Requirements Minimum requirements are stated in the Class Specification. For this classification, there are two applicable titles:

Possession of a valid driver’s license is required when operating a state-owned or leased vehicle. Final eligibility will be verified prior to interview/appointment. If eligibility is based on education, unofficial transcripts or diploma should be provided for verification.
