Overview
Social Service Practitioner I (SSP I) is the trainee level of the professional social work series. Positions provide professional social work services including diagnosis, assessment, intervention and case management support to children and/or families with complex health, psychological or economic problems. Travel and field work, including home visits, are a routine part of these assignments. A video preview of the role is available. Responsibilities
Provide professional social work services including assessment, intervention and case management; investigate and support cases involving neglect, abuse, emotional or behavioral problems, physical/mental disabilities or other health conditions. Travel and home visits are a routine part of these assignments. Training and Advancement
SSP I work under close supervision in a training capacity while acquiring necessary skills to qualify for promotion to SSP II. Starting salary may be commensurate with qualifications and/or child welfare experience. Promotion details: Promotion to SSP II upon completion of training or meeting minimum SSP II requirements, with a satisfactory Work Performance Evaluation; incumbents must promote within twelve (12) months of hire or be terminated. SSP II may automatically promote to SSP III (salary range: 84,531 – 100,505 annually) after completing 3 full years (6,240 hours) of service as SSP II, or an equivalent County-approved classification. Hours at the SSP I trainee level do not count toward SSP II to SSP III advancement. Salary and Benefits
Salary and benefits include planned increases and a comprehensive benefits package. See details below. 3% annual across-the-board salary increases effective August 8, 2026 (contingent on property-related revenue and statewide Realignment Sales Tax collections performance). Bi-annual step increases of 2.5% up to the Top Step of the applicable salary range. Recruitment bonuses up to $2,000 for newly hired employees under this recruitment; remote assignment bonuses up to $2,000 for positions in Victorville, Barstow, Yucca Valley, and Needles may apply. Two lucrative benefits packages are offered, including health benefits, paid time off, and retirement/perks, along with retirement-related programs and other voluntary benefits. Applicants must meet one of the following options: Option A:
Bachelor’s degree in Social Work (BSW) from a program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education. Applications are accepted from candidates within 120 days of completing a BSW. Offers may be contingent upon degree completion; verification required before hire. Option B:
Coursework in Behavioral Science, Psychology, Social Services/Human Services, Cultural and Gender Studies, or Human Development totaling 30 semester units (45 quarter units) at graduate or upper-division level. Note: Candidates with other degree titles may be considered if they provide coursework for review. A list of completed coursework or transcripts is required unless a qualifying degree has been obtained. Experience requirement: Two years of casework experience equivalent to a Social Worker II in the county. Note: Experience as a Social Worker II Trainee is not qualifying. Degrees and coursework must be from an accredited institution; U.S. degrees must align with the U.S. Department of Education standards. Foreign degrees require evaluation for equivalency. Conditions of employment include statewide and nationwide travel, with local travel supported. A valid California Class C driver license and proof of automobile liability insurance are required. The position may require home visits and risk assessments, and incumbents must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
