Postdoctoral Associate – Visual System Evolution Location: Main Campus, Gainesville, FL | Employment Type: Full Time

Position Summary: A postdoctoral associate will be mentored in the laboratory of Dr. Kyle McCulloch, where multidisciplinary projects explore the genetics, physiology, and behavior of opsin-expressing sensory cells in the model cnidarian

Nematostella vectensis . The candidate will contribute to ongoing genomics, evo-devo, neurophysiology, and behavior projects, and may develop independent research ideas in collaboration with lab members.

Responsibilities

Design and conduct experiments in genetics, genomics, electrophysiology, calcium imaging, or microscopy to investigate opsin function and visual system evolution.

Analyze data using bioinformatics tools and statistical software.

Collaborate with lab members on grant proposals, manuscript preparation, and conference presentations.

Develop independent research projects and pursue extramural fellowship opportunities.

Maintain laboratory records, safety protocols, and equipment maintenance.

Qualifications

PhD in Biology, Genetics, Neuroscience, Evolutionary Biology, or a related field.

Strong background in molecular biology, genetics, genomics, electrophysiology, calcium imaging, or microscopy.

Demonstrated ability to think critically, work independently, and communicate effectively.

Strong publication record in peer‑reviewed journals.

Experience with quantitative data analysis and bioinformatics techniques is preferred.

Compensation and Benefits Salary: $60,000/year (subject to merit review). The position is initially awarded for one year and may be renewed for a second year contingent on funding and performance.
