Responsibilities

Level I – Core Clinical Sonographer Perform routine and emergency echocardiograms, including 2‑dimensional, 3‑dimensional, Doppler, transesophageal, and stress studies as requested by the physician. Provide echocardiography services at all necessary locations with variable shifts, weekends, and on‑call coverage. Operate and maintain equipment, perform preventive maintenance, and report malfunction. Analyze patient history and prepare preliminary reports for cardiologist review. Participate in quality improvement, maintain logs, and attend lab meetings. Instruct students, fellows, and nursing staff as requested, and maintain confidentiality of patient and corporate information.

Level II – Advanced Clinical Sonographer Enhance patient testing with routine, non‑routine, urgent, and emergent requests. Perform advanced cardiac ultrasound services and procedures, manipulating images for real‑time and offline analysis. Assist physicians with guided studies and provide pre‑ and post‑procedure image review. Serve as a resource to cardiology fellows and on‑boarding site charge sonographers, recommend quality assurance initiatives, and act as a preceptor for new cardiac sonographers.

Level III – Clinical Lead Sonographer Lead advanced cardiac ultrasound services for congenital, myocardial mechanics, 3‑D imaging, and stress studies. Serve as an expert resource, instructing and educating staff sonographers. Perform quality assurance to ensure comprehensive data acquisition and implement consistent exam protocols. Provide in‑service education, case reviews, and collaborate with the Echocardiography Technical Manager and Medical Director on policy and procedure updates. Maintain ICAEL compliance, oversee site charge responsibilities, and supervise staff performance, coaching, and development.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Proficiency in performing routine and emergency echocardiograms across modalities.

Expertise in operating and maintaining sophisticated echocardiographic equipment and ancillary devices.

Ability to interpret patient history, prepare accurate preliminary reports, and engage in continuous quality improvement.

Strong communication skills for coordinating with physicians, nursing staff, and educational trainees.

Commitment to maintaining confidentiality and fostering a collaborative, cooperative work environment.

Education Graduate or completion of program that meets eligibility requirements for registry/certification or currently holds required registry or certification.

Experience None required beyond above education/certification requirements. Level I – Must obtain ARDMS certifications as required within 18 months of employment. Level II – Minimum of two years' experience as a Sonographer. Level III – Minimum of four years' experience within specialty modality.

Degrees, Licensures, Certifications ARDMS/CCI certification in Echocardiography within 18 months of hire; BLS certification. ARDMS certification for Level I and Level II, appropriate certifications for Level III specialization.
