Pay Range Base pay: $58,705.00/yr - $112,940.00/yr.

Summary This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student loan payment reimbursement program. Applicants must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit their EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services determines award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years).

Qualifications

All applicants must possess the following: United States citizenship.

Non-citizens may only be appointed when qualified citizens are not available per VA policy.

A bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited college or university.

Certification: Candidates must meet one of the following options:

Generalist certification as an MLS from ASCP BOC or AMT.

Generalist certification as an MT from ASCP BOR or AMT.

Note: Categorical and specialist certifications are not acceptable for CLS Generalist positions.

Applicants who do not currently hold valid certification may be hired and work toward certification if they meet one of the routes identified in Appendix A that qualifies them to take the MLS certification exam through the ASCP BOC or AMT.

Foreign education: To be creditable, education completed outside the U.S. must be deemed at least equivalent to a U.S. program by an acceptable evaluation agency or through a letter from ASCP BOC or AMT.

English language proficiency: Candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English per 38 U.S.C. § 7403(f).

Grade determinations: Candidates must meet the grade‑determining criteria for GS‑07 through GS‑11 as specified in the vacancy.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of policies and procedures of clinical laboratory testing.

Knowledge of laboratory quality control and assurance principles.

Knowledge of laboratory equipment and routine maintenance.

Ability to work as a team member and complete assignments.

Ability to read and interpret written instructions.

Ability to accurately perform pre‑analytical, analytical, and post‑analytical phases of testing.

Ability to maintain, troubleshoot, and repair instrumentation.

Ability to use independent technical judgment to analyze and interpret laboratory results.

Ability to communicate, consult, and interact with other healthcare team members.

Duties

Perform a broad range of laboratory procedures across multiple disciplines (bacteriology, chemistry, coagulation, hematology, immunology, blood banking, urinalysis).

Monitor quality control and aid in patient diagnosis and treatment.

Recognize deviations from expected results and apply scientific principles to correct them.

Maintain and document optimal functioning of laboratory equipment.

Calibrate, identify malfunctions, repair, and perform preventive maintenance of equipment.

Diagnose deviations in test performance due to instrument malfunctions.

Document quality control and assurance activities and corrective actions.

Adhere to biosafety and biosecurity regulations.

Interpret results, suggest follow‑up tests, and recommend procedures.

Communicate results effectively to healthcare providers and patients.

Provide excellent service to customers (healthcare providers, patients, and others).

Organize work, set priorities, and meet deadlines.

Follow all VHA and local safety directives.

Perform other duties as assigned depending on grade level.

Work schedule: Full‑time, Monday through Friday (varied hour shifts as listed).

All tours rotate weekends and holidays per service needs.
