AUSTIN, TX Posting Details Posting Number: 8172 Closing Date: 10/13/2025 Salary Range: $5,370.75 - $6,335.68 per month Pay Frequency: Monthly Shift: Day Telework: Not Eligible for Telework Travel: Up to 10% Regular/Temporary: Regular Full Time/Part Time: Full time FLSA: Exempt Facility Location: Austin State Hospital Overview HHSC seeks a Mental Health Specialist III to provide senior-level psychological/therapeutic work, including consultation on behavioral interventions and direct patient therapy, within a hospital setting. The role involves collaboration with treatment teams, development of treatment plans, and participation in quality improvement activities. The position may require alternate shift patterns to support agency needs and disaster response or COOP activation. Essential Job Functions (EJFs) • Perform individual, group, and/or family psychotherapy with patients referred from assigned units; conduct assessments and develop treatment plans to support recovery and psychiatric stability. • Provide consultation on behavioral interventions; coordinate projects and program changes to apply evidence-based practices and improve care quality; document all activities in the medical record. • Develop and implement specialized psychoeducational groups; train staff on behavior plans; monitor effectiveness and adjust as needed. • Analyze patient behavior, implement behavior plans, and supervise staff in plan execution; participate in discharge planning and family meetings as needed. • Lead or participate in continuing education opportunities for hospital staff; participate in quality assurance activities (chart audits, tracers, etc.). • Support disaster response/COOP efforts and may be assigned to alternate shifts or locations. Knowledge, Skills And Abilities (KSAs) • Knowledge of psychology and related treatment techniques; skilled in interviewing and diagnostic assessment; ability to conduct individual, group, and family psychotherapy. • Ability to develop and monitor rehabilitation plans, supervise others, and implement milieu-based behavior therapy programs. Registrations, Licensure Requirements Or Certifications None Initial Screening Criteria • Graduation from an accredited college/university with a master’s or doctoral degree in psychology, counseling, or related field. • Two years of experience in psychological/therapeutic work. Additional Information Applicants must pass fingerprint background check, pre-employment drug screen, and required registry checks. Immunization policies apply.
