Description The Maryland National Capital Park & Planning Commission is an award‑winning organization with over 5,000 employees that administers over 52,000 acres of parkland in Montgomery and Prince George’s counties. The Department of Parks & Recreation oversees all park and recreation facilities, with the Facility Services Division (FSD) providing professional maintenance and support across six work areas. This position is located in the Fleet Management section and performs difficult mechanical work on gasoline and diesel powered vehicles and power equipment.
Responsibilities
Plan work and receive work orders for mechanical projects. Troubleshoot and determine causes of equipment malfunction to identify type and extent of repairs. Conduct technical research.
Perform difficult mechanical work, including major repairs on vehicles and equipment. Rebuild, change, align, and modify components of gasoline and diesel powered vehicles (engines, transmissions, differentials, clutches, axles, etc.). Fit and install parts to exact tolerances and specifications, adjust systems for proper operation, and repair electrical, mechanical, exhaust, fuel, lubrication, cooling, hydraulic, electronic, and computer system malfunctions.
Replace or overhaul brake and fuel systems, generators, alternators, starters, distributors, and electronic ignition systems. Rebuild and replace components such as brakes, lights, horns, belts, hoses, shock absorbers, ball joints, tie rods, mufflers, fuel pumps, and other parts. Clean and paint equipment.
Repair vehicle emissions systems.
Perform regular preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment: change oil, filters, fluids; lubricate moving parts; replace or charge batteries; inflate, balance, rotate tires; adjust brakes and clutches; tune engines.
Complete required administrative paperwork and record keeping.
Manage inventory of power equipment, tools, safety equipment, and vehicles assigned to crew.
Drive and transport workers, tools, equipment, materials, and supplies. Load/unload tools and equipment. Tow vehicles and equipment to garage for repairs. Test drive vehicles and equipment after repairs.
Assume supervisory responsibilities for Mechanics, Trades Trainees, and General Maintenance Workers. Provide instructions and training on proper procedures, methods, and safety.
Key Qualifications
High School diploma or Certificate of General Educational Development (GED).
Completion of an approved mechanical apprentice program; or four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in maintenance and repair of automotive and/or heavy motor equipment.
Two (2) years of experience at the journey level.
Combined education and experience totaling six (6) years.
Valid driver’s license in accordance with State and Commission rules. License must be unencumbered, valid, and able to operate Commission vehicles.
Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements within 12 months of employment.
Pass Commission medical examination.
Additional Information Work Hours : 6:30 am – 3:15 pm
Salary : $51,235 – $90,741
ASE certifications preferred
