Overview
LSU Health Sciences Center Division of Facility Services in New Orleans is seeking applicants for the position of HVAC/Refrigeration Mechanic. The applicant must possess two years of experience or training in the installation and/or maintenance of heating, ventilating, or air conditioning systems.
Responsibilities
Maintains, inspects, and repairs heating, ventilating, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment and components including compressors, condensers, expansion valves, service valves, thermostats, coils, and drive assemblies.
Maintains and repairs electrical wiring for motors, controls and other electrical circuits related to heating, ventilating, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment.
Operates, monitors and controls system-wide output.
May serve as sole operator on an assigned shift (evenings, overnight, weekends, holidays) during campus emergencies and/or staffing shortages.
Checks all equipment for proper fluid levels and operation before use.
Plans, prices, and orders materials necessary for repairs using proper facility purchasing rules/regulations.
Necessary Special Requirement As of November 14, 1994, employees must possess the EPA refrigerant recycling and recovery certification for technicians (as required under Section 608 of the Clean Air Act, 1990).

Function of Work and Details To provide skilled installation, maintenance, and repair on heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration units in large office buildings, hospitals, and multi-building complexes. Level of Work: Experienced. Supervision Received: General from a HVAC/Refrigeration Foreman or maintenance supervisor of higher grade. Supervision Exercised: None. Location of Work: May be used by all state agencies. Job Distinctions: Differs from Trades Apprentice by presence of journeyman level duties. Differs from HVAC/Refrigeration Master Mechanic by lack of responsibility for major overhaul and modification of complex large tonnage, high horsepower centrifugal chillers, and other advanced HVAC/Refrigeration systems. Repairs and maintains heating, ventilating, air conditioning, and refrigeration equipment in buildings or complexes requiring total HVAC capacity of 20 tons or more. Performs preventive maintenance duties on motors: adding coolant, adjusting controls, changing filters, etc. Recharges air conditioning systems with proper amount of lubricant or refrigerant. Overhauls and repairs pumps, motors, control systems, piping, and other equipment used in refrigerating and air conditioning systems. Reports temperatures produced by machines and makes necessary adjustments to produce desired temperatures. Installs, replaces, adjusts, and calibrates major components of refrigeration units: compressors, condensers, expansion valves, service valves, thermostats, coils, and drive assemblies. Maintains records, log sheets, inventory, etc. Services equipment with lubricants and chemicals.
