The Senior Engineer’s purpose is to solve technical problems, develop applicable documentation, and supervise all assigned resources to support the assigned project. The Senior Engineer assists the engineering organization in determining the technical requirements of the project, defining resource requirements to achieve schedule and budget commitments, and solving technical issues as they arise within the field of competence. Lead or participate in product improvement projects and working groups Define, track, monitor, and provide direction for subcontract activities Define, track and control subcontractor activities Effectively supervise and mentor assigned resources during onboarding, skill development, or projects. An Engineer II may be included with interviewing potential new team members and training employees. With supervising, this may include planning, assigning, and directing work of assigned individuals, participating in the appraising performance, addressing complaints with development opportunities, and resolving problems. Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology and 6 years of experience of increasing responsibility in the engineering field of competence. This requirement can also be met with an Associate’s Degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology and 8 years of experience, or a High School Diploma or GED and 9 years of experience. Supervisory experience desired. Six Sigma or LEAN training desired. Requirements: Must have experience with naval systems, proven by verifiable and specific work experience, technical publication, or patent issue. Working knowledge of standard shipbuilding rules and regulations, as well as the associated regulatory agencies and the review & approval process. The Senior Structural Engineer will play a critical role in the structural design, analysis, and integration of the FFG-62 class guided missile frigates, leading technical efforts across basic and detailed design phases. Reporting to the Engineering Supervisor, this role requires a deep command of naval structural engineering, with an emphasis on military standards, survivability, and structural resilience in accordance with ABS Naval Vessel Rules (NVR), US Navy instructions, and MIL-STDs. The candidate will be responsible for the oversight and execution of structural engineering packages including 3D modeling, finite element analysis (FEA), technical reviews, and verification of compliance with Navy and classification society requirements. This position requires leadership in cross-functional teams, interface with internal departments (production, quality, program management), and external stakeholders (US Navy, NAVSEA, ABS, subcontractors). Key Responsibilities

Lead and approve the structural design and analysis of ship structures across all design phases (basic, functional, detail) with a focus on longitudinal strength, hull girder integrity, local structure design, and fatigue life evaluation. Serve as technical lead for the integration of structural requirements into ShipConstructor 3D model environment, ensuring alignment with weight budgets, CG requirements, and outfitting constraints. Manage and conduct finite element analysis using FEMAP/NASTRAN, ANSYS, and class-specific platforms (SESAM, Nauticus Hull, Mars) to assess yielding, buckling, vibration response, fatigue, and dynamic loading profiles. Perform structural analyses for both initial design and retrofit/upgrade scenarios, including shock and underwater explosion assessments (per MIL-S-901D, etc.). Review and interpret Navy specifications, ABS NVR, ASTM, ISO, and MIL-STDs applicable to hull structure design, ensuring full contract and regulatory compliance. Develop, review, and maintain structural drawings, calculation packages, test plans, and technical reports for NAVSEA and ABS submittals. Coordinate technical interfaces across disciplines (outfitting, combat systems, electrical, mechanical) to resolve structural interferences and establish practical design solutions. Support the development and application of department-specific analysis tools, spreadsheets, and workflows to increase productivity and traceability of structural analysis. Collaborate with production to resolve buildability and alignment issues during construction; support non-conformance evaluations and root-cause analysis when needed. Contribute to planning activities including estimating engineering hours, schedule development, task prioritization, and resource allocation. Mentor junior engineers and lead knowledge-sharing initiatives to raise engineering excellence across the department.
