The Structural Engineer - Engineer I will play a critical role in the structural design, analysis, and integration of the FFG-62 class guided missile frigates, leading technical efforts across basic and detailed design phases. Reporting to the Engineering Supervisor, this role requires a deep command of naval structural engineering, with an emphasis on military standards, survivability, and structural resilience in accordance with ABS Naval Vessel Rules (NVR), US Navy instructions, and MIL-STDs.

The candidate will be responsible for the oversight and execution of structural engineering packages including 3D modeling, finite element analysis (FEA), technical reviews, and verification of compliance with Navy and classification society requirements. This position requires leadership in cross-functional teams, interface with internal departments (production, quality, program management), and external stakeholders (US Navy, NAVSEA, ABS, subcontractors).

Key Responsibilities

Lead and approve the structural design and analysis of ship structures across all design phases (basic, functional, detail) with a focus on longitudinal strength, hull girder integrity, local structure design, and fatigue life evaluation. Serve as technical lead for the integration of structural requirements into ShipConstructor 3D model environment, ensuring alignment with weight budgets, CG requirements, and outfitting constraints. Manage and conduct finite element analysis using tools such as FEMAP/NASTRAN, ANSYS, and class-specific platforms (SESAM, Nauticus Hull, Mars) to assess yielding, buckling, vibration response, fatigue, and dynamic loading profiles. Perform structural analyses for both initial design and retrofit/upgrade scenarios, including shock and underwater explosion assessments (per MIL-S-901D, etc.). Review and interpret Navy specifications, ABS NVR, ASTM, ISO, and MIL-STDs applicable to hull structure design, ensuring full contract and regulatory compliance. Develop, review, and maintain structural drawings, calculation packages, test plans, and technical reports for NAVSEA and ABS submittals. Coordinate technical interfaces across disciplines (outfitting, combat systems, electrical, mechanical) to resolve structural interferences and establish practical design solutions. Support the development and application of department-specific analysis tools, spreadsheets, and workflows to increase productivity and traceability of structural analysis. Collaborate with production to resolve buildability and alignment issues during construction; support non-conformance evaluations and root-cause analysis when needed. Contribute to planning activities including estimating engineering hours, schedule development, task prioritization, and resource allocation. Mentor junior engineers and lead knowledge-sharing initiatives to raise engineering excellence across the department.

Education/Certification Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Naval Architecture, Structural Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering. Master’s degree strongly preferred. 4-8 years of professional experience in naval ship design, with at least 3 years supporting government or military shipbuilding programs. 2-4 years in a design office certified under ISO 9001:2015 with demonstrated understanding of documentation, traceability, and quality control processes.

Requirements

Proficient in using FEA tools (FEMAP, NASTRAN, ANSYS, SESAM, Nauticus Hull, etc.) and class tools such as ABS SafeHull, Veristar Hull.

Demonstrated knowledge of ship scantling design per ABS NVR, DNV, or LR rules, and familiarity with ISO 12215, NS 3472, and Eurocodes. Experience in technical report writing, class/Navy correspondence, and presenting engineering justifications to approval authorities.

Preferred

Experience working with the U.S. Navy, NAVSEA, or related military ship programs. Familiarity with combatant survivability requirements including shock, EM signature, and damage stability integration. Working knowledge of ShipConstructor or other 3D marine CAD software for structural modeling. US Citizenship required for access to export-controlled and ITAR-sensitive materials.

Other Skills & Competencies

Proven experience in a matrixed engineering environment with ability to drive results across design and production disciplines. High attention to detail, accountability, and documentation rigor. Strong interpersonal communication skills, capable of engaging stakeholders ranging from junior designers to Navy inspectors. Continuous improvement mindset with ability to lead initiatives to refine workflows, increase technical capability, and enhance collaboration.

This position is critical to maintaining schedule adherence, structural integrity, and mission capability of the FFG-62 class.

The Structural Engineer will be a key voice in shaping the technical foundation of one of the Navy’s most important next-generation combatants. Seniority level
