Director of Biology and Environment Description:

Develop, implement, and lead fish and wildlife research and management activities on the Grand Portage Reservation. Coordinate and co-manage fisheries across Lake Superior and wildlife in the 1854 ceded territory of Minnesota. Create natural resource management plans, climate adaptation strategies, and guiding documents that protect and enhance tribal resources, human health, tribal sovereignty, and treaty-reserved rights. Responsible for acquiring, managing, and reporting on external grant funding to support Trust Lands staff, natural resource projects, infrastructure, and administrative needs. Represent the 1854 Treaty Authority on the Lake Superior Technical Committee of the Great Lakes Fishery Commission and the Minnesota DNR's Lake Superior Advisory Group, guiding fisheries management in Lake Superior. Education:

Master of Science (MS) required. Qualifications:

Extensive field experience in fisheries or wildlife research and management, including aquatic, fisheries, and wildlife survey techniques, wildlife handling and immobilization, small and large vessel operation, and aquaculture or fish hatchery systems. Strong analytical skills for estimating fisheries and wildlife populations are beneficial. Excellent written and oral communication skills are required. Marine and small engine mechanic experience is a plus. Knowledge of tribal natural resources and treaty rights will be a strong asset. Grand Portage requires a background check and pre-employment drug and alcohol testing for all positions. American Indian Preference will apply.
