Job Summary
As a Public Works Service Worker I, you will perform non‑skilled and skilled manual labor and operate trucks and equipment to support Public Works Department construction and maintenance activities in Minneapolis.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
Remove, replace, or place infrastructure such as pipe, conduit, concrete, and asphalt.
Load, unload, and secure materials and equipment from trucks using hand tools or mechanical loading equipment.
Operate trucks and equipment—including skid‑steer loaders, pup‑rollers, toilers, snow plows, solid waste, collection, sweepers, and other assigned vehicles.
Perform daily inspection, maintenance, and minor service work on vehicles and equipment.
Conduct routine inspections, repairs, and cleaning of sanitary and storm infrastructure, including pipes, tunnels, maintenance holes, and grit chambers.
Assist with maintenance of streets and alleys: shoveling, snow removal, mowing, and brush trimming.
Assist with installation and maintenance of traffic signs, street markings, parking meter supports, and barricades.
Operate winches, pumps, hoists, and heavy power tools such as jack hammers and concrete saws.
Measure, calculate, and record quantities of materials used and work performed.
Prepare and apply mix materials such as sand, cement, sealants, and de‑icing chemicals.
Work with crew members for tagging and flagging heavy equipment and assisting with on‑site traffic control.
Perform excavation, placement, and replacement of infrastructure in utility trenches and below grade.
Collect garbage, recycling, yard waste, and special items, sorting and transporting them to appropriate drop‑off sites.
Work safely in confined spaces, on ladders, stairs, and platforms, and comply with OSHA respirator requirements.
Required Qualifications
Minimum age 18 years.
High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent.
At least one year of manual labor experience in a similar environment and prior operation of construction equipment.
Class B Commercial Driver's License with no air‑brake restrictions (tanker endorsement required for some assignments).
Current, valid CDL with a clean driving record; no permit licenses allowed.
Successful completion of a federal criminal background check and required qualifications verification.
Ability to pass a pre‑employment medical exam, respiratory screening, and pre‑employment drug and alcohol test.
Random drug testing applicable to CDL holders during employment.
Selection Process The selection involves a Workplace Simulation Test (physical agility and lifting), a Division Practical Exam (confined space and elevated work), and an on‑site interview following successful test completion.
