Job Description First United Methodist Church is a large, vibrant church in the center of Dothan, AL. Our Worship Arts Ministry has long been an important aspect of our worship at FUMC Dothan for members and visitors alike. We are seeking a passionate and skilled Assistant Worship Arts Director/Organist to support the thriving music ministry at First United Methodist Church of Dothan, Alabama. This role involves collaborating with the Worship Arts Director to enhance worship experiences through music, and providing musical accompaniment during services, rehearsals, and special events. This position plays a vital role in the worship life at FUMC Dothan, AL leading service playing for two traditional worship services each Sunday and supporting rehearsals for a number of ensembles throughout the week. A Bachelor's degree in organ performance or equivalent experience is required. A Master’s Degree is preferred.

The Successful Candidate Will:

Have a high level of artistry and proficiency in playing both the piano and the organ.

Have excellent sight-reading skills.

Have the ability to accompany large choral singing, chamber ensembles, and soloists as well.

Be comfortable with a wide mix of musical styles including but not limited to traditional Methodist hymnody, Taize, classical church choir repertoire, current repertoire, African-American Spiritual, Southern Gospel, Black Gospel, and World Music.

Have an extensive repertoire of organ music representing various styles and cultures, which shall cover all the seasons of the liturgical year.

Work collegially and demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills. Be self‑motivated, creative, and understand the importance of music in the church’s ministry.

Behave in a manner that brings honor to Christ and the church, support United Methodist theology, and participate as a team player with the rest of the church staff.

Job Requirements

Provide organ music for Sunday morning worship services and additional services according to the liturgical year. Provide music for weddings and funeral services (additional compensation).

Be prepared to provide musical leadership for other worship services such as the Staff Chapel Communion service.

Serve as accompanist for the Chancel Choir and attend weekly rehearsals. Also serve as accompanist for additional Worship Arts Ministry ensembles as needed.

Supervise Volunteer Music Librarians and assist the Worship Arts Director in the maintenance of the Music Library.

Arrange for a substitute organist in the event of absence/illness/vacation/professional development.

Maintain the Sanctuary and Chapel organs and all pianos on campus.

Attend weekly staff meetings and Worship Planning meetings.

Oversee, develop, and conduct the handbell program of the church. Work with the Worship Arts Director in directing and developing the Children’s Chimes ensemble.

Offer piano and organ lessons through the church for additional compensation.

Work with the Worship Arts Director to organize and facilitate the annual Summer Worship Arts Camp.
