Penn Vet's New Bolton Center provides an internationally renowned standard of care. Located on a campus of about 700 acres in Chester County, Pennsylvania, New Bolton Center has one of the largest caseloads of any academic large animal hospital in the nation. This position encompasses operating room responsibilities, sterilizing duties and general nursing care for large animal patients. The facility is located in Kennett Square, PA. No public transportation is available; free onsite parking is provided. Responsibilities

Assist in preparation and circulation for all surgical procedures in the large animal hospital. Prepare assigned operating rooms as required for the intended procedure. Assist in getting patients to surgery and properly positioned for the procedure. Restraint and handling of large animals as required. Prepare patients for surgery by clipping, cleansing and aseptic prepping of the surgical site. Coordinate with other Operating Room Nurses to ensure efficient operation and adequate coverage in all rooms. Demonstrate thorough knowledge of surgical instruments and surgical equipment operation including Medical Lasers, Cryotherapy, Endoscopy, Laparoscopy and Fluoroscopy. Demonstrate excellent knowledge of sterile and aseptic technique. Ensure that all Operating Rooms are well stocked and that equipment is stored and functioning properly. Maintain usual surgical requests and surgery logs; update Department SOPs and enter billing information into EMR. Prepare and administer medications, including controlled drugs. Assist Surgical team in donning of surgical attire and table setup. Independently operate various surgical tables and overhead hoist systems. Assist anesthesia staff in recovery of patients. Prepare and maintain equipment for Pool Recovery System; assign tasks and guide personnel and students during Pool Recovery. Clean and maintain all Central Supply equipment and stock; independently operate steam autoclaves, ETO sterilizer and other equipment. Review the surgery schedule to determine priority of instrumentation; inspect, test, assemble, package and label instruments for sterilization. Guide Harcum veterinary nursing students through daily activities; provide demonstrations and instruction on all aspects of OR Nursing and Central Supply; submit comprehensive student evaluations to the rotation supervisor. Provide guidance to veterinary students during aseptic preparation and throughout surgical procedures; continually develop medical knowledge to teach students; provide demonstrations and support in lab and classroom settings. Run biological monitoring, incubate and read results; decontaminate instrumentation and equipment according to policy; prepare disinfectants and operate washers and ultrasonic cleaners as needed. Wash and dry laundry; maintain the laundry room; recognize safety hazards and take corrective actions; maintain Department SOPs. Assist with ordering and receiving Central Supply stock. This position is eligible for a sign-on incentive of $1,000.

Experienced Veterinary Assistants or experienced non-certified Veterinary Technicians will be considered. Experience with sterile processing techniques is preferred. Ability to function quickly and calmly in stressful patient-care situations; experience handling large animals with restraint. Good interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with faculty, staff, students, and clients, both written and oral. Position requires rotating/on-call schedules, occasional overtime, and some weekend work; a 30-minute travel time to the hospital when on-call. Veterinary Nurse A: Associate's Degree from an AVMA-accredited veterinary technician program and 0-1 year of experience, or equivalent. Veterinary Nurse B: Associate's Degree from an AVMA-accredited veterinary technician program and 1-3 years of experience, or equivalent. Job Location
