Veterinary Technician A Job Description Summary
This role is responsible for all aspects of patient care in the large animal hospital, including performing treatments, basic procedures, emergency management, and teaching. Job Description
A Day in the Life: A New Veterinary Technician at Penn Vet’s Ryan Hospital It’s your first week at Penn Vet’s Ryan Hospital, and you are excited to start. You have just graduated from tech school, passed the VTNE, and you are working in one of the country’s busiest veterinary teaching hospitals. You will work with your assigned mentor, review the caseload, and learn by doing as you gain confidence with each skill. Your shift starts early. You help place IV catheters, prep medications, monitor vitals, and observe emergency RECOVER protocols. You assist with patient treatments, check fluid lines, administer medications, and participate in restraint and supervision as needed. You will rotate through departments, pursue CE credits, and have the potential to work toward Veterinary Technician Specialty (VTS) certification. By lunch, you’ll join coworkers and discuss a wide variety of cases. Your mentor checks in to review training goals and you’ll see a clear path forward with opportunities to grow. At the end of your shift, you’ll feel tired but proud, knowing you’ve made a difference and learned from the best. Tomorrow, you’ll continue to grow and develop as a veterinary nurse.
