Job Description: School Nurse
The school nurse provides support to the instructional process by serving as a nurse responsible for identifying, evaluating, and providing health services for students. The nurse collects and reviews information on the health and developmental status of students systematically and continuously. Responsibilities include developing and maintaining individualized nursing care plans, administering medications, treatments, and procedures as directed by physicians and district policies. The nurse collaborates with teachers, staff, and administrators, and responds to inquiries from parents/guardians regarding student health and wellness. Clinical supervision of licensed and unlicensed personnel may be provided.
This position reports to the principal with input from the Director of Health Services and requires a valid Alaska educator certificate. The work schedule is based on the AEA negotiated pay scale, with benefits linked to FTE status.
Job Requirements
Bachelor’s of Science degree in Nursing
Valid Alaska Type C Special Services Certificate with an endorsement in nursing or school nursing
Alaska RN license or temporary license leading to full licensure
Passing NCLEX score
Current BLS certification
Preferred:
Two years of nursing, assessment, and referral experience
Essential Job Functions
Support student learning and promote health and wellness
Assist in identifying students with disabilities and participate in multidisciplinary teams
Communicate regularly with parents
Understand student development and apply this knowledge in practice
Maintain standards of pupil behavior
Conduct medical screenings and coordinate medical plans for trips
Provide nursing services including health history interpretation, health monitoring, immunization review, treatment, medication management, diabetes and seizure management, health counseling, and community linkage
Promote health and prevent injury/disease through education
Respect students’ individual and cultural characteristics
Utilize current technology to improve practice
Create a conducive nursing environment and collaborate with families and community
Perform other duties as needed
Physical and Mental Demands Requires frequent standing, walking, sitting, speaking, and hearing. Visual acuity and the ability to lift less than 40 lbs are necessary. Must handle conflicts, make decisions under pressure, and manage stress effectively in a diverse environment.
Work Environment Work occurs in a professional setting with diverse individuals. Exposure to outdoor weather and moderate noise levels is possible.
Additional Information Employment is contingent upon a criminal background check. The position may involve working at ASD facilities on JBER military installations. The district is an equal employment opportunity employer.
