Job Description The Pharmacy Technician III reflects the mission, vision, and values of NM, adheres to the Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance, and complies with all relevant policies and regulations.
Responsibilities
Prepare medication orders for inpatients and outpatients.
Picks up orders and delivers medications to nursing units.
Schedule intravenous admixture solutions according to the patient’s medical record; report any variance to a pharmacist.
Answer the telephone according to hospital policy and screen calls for pharmacist or technician.
Enter new drug orders and renewal/refill info into the computerized patient medication profile.
Assist with dispensing and inquiry functions using the computer system.
Compare patient medication bins with pharmacy and nursing records; reconcile discrepancies.
Receive, prepare, and distribute floor stock requisitions for other clinical locations.
Compound dosage forms needed for dispensing; package extemporaneous and STAT single doses under pharmacist supervision.
Prepare and maintain emergency medication systems.
Prepare sterile products for patient administration, selecting proper diluents and vehicles.
Prepare cytotoxic agents following aseptic and protective procedures.
Plan and perform daily tasks required to provide department services under pharmacist direction.
Prepare and deliver narcotics and narcotic admixtures; conduct perpetual inventories.
Meet quality and quantity requirements for new orders, unit doses, IV admixtures.
Ensure compliance with hazardous waste collection and disposal procedures.
Quality Management Responsibilities
Assist in maintaining emergency carts, inventory, and controlled substances records to ensure an efficient, error‑free drug distribution system.
Scheduling
Work part‑time, 32 hours weekly on a rotating schedule.
Shift times: Day (6am‑9am), Swing (12pm‑8:30pm), Evening (2pm‑10:30pm).
Weekend commitment: Every other weekend (Saturday & Sunday).
Holiday commitment: 1 winter and 1 summer holiday.
Primary work location: Feinberg 9th floor pharmacy; position may rotate to other pharmacies within Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
Qualifications
High School Diploma.
Illinois Pharmacy Technician License (IDFPR).
Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) via PTCB or ExCPT via NHA required for those licensed after 2008; newly licensed technicians have 2 years to obtain certification.
Preferred
Completion of a Technician Training Program.
Previous experience as a Pharmacy Technician.
