Mental Health Counselor LII, Correctional Health Services – Part‑Time Employer:

Location:

Outposted Therapeutic Housing Units (OTxHU) within NYC Health + Hospital acute care facilities.

Pay Range:

$35,638.00 per year – $35,638.00 per year.

Company Overview:

New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation has been the direct provider of health care in New York City jails since 2016. As part of the system, the Correctional Health Services (CHS) team delivers medical, nursing, and mental health care; pharmacy services; substance‑use treatment; social work; dental and vision care; discharge planning; and reentry support. The OTxHU program aims to bridge the continuum between jail care and inpatient hospitalization, providing high‑quality clinical care to patients in custody with complex health conditions.

Duties & Responsibilities

Conduct mental health evaluations, crisis intervention, assessments, and follow‑up care.

Collaborate on determining disposition of patients for appropriate level of mental health care.

Coordinate with Reentry Social Workers for appropriate discharge planning services.

Complete required statistical reports.

Collaborate with the Department of Correction to ensure access to patients, proper housing, and treatment disposition.

Coordinate patient care with other institutional services and programs.

Facilitate or co‑facilitate leading mental health group treatment.

Complete all required documentation.

Participate in clinical supervision with Clinical Supervisor at least once a week.

Participate in mental health and medical rounds as assigned.

Participate in case conferences and treatment planning for patients receiving and being considered for mental health treatment.

May conduct psychological testing as assigned, under supervision.

May supervise social work interns or student volunteers as assigned.

Perform other duties as assigned by Senior/Clinical Supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications

Assignment Level II.

Valid license and current registration to practice as a Mental Health Counselor issued by the NYSED; and two (2) years of full‑time, paid, professional experience providing direct client care in a behavioral health setting.

Department Preferences

Excellent diagnostic and treatment skills.

Demonstrated knowledge of psychopathology in assessing patients in need of mental health treatment, including mental status examination and diagnosis.

Excellent interpersonal communication skills and ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team, as well as with NYC DOC staff.

Flexible disposition.

Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) or Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC).

Special Note The administration of assessment and screening instruments does not include the administration or interpretation of intelligence (IQ) tests, projective tests, or neuropsychological tests or instruments.
