Mental Health Counselor LII, Correctional Health Services, OTxHU-Bellevue
Join NYC Health + Hospitals as a Mental Health Counselor LII, working in the Outposted Therapeutic Housing Units (OTxHU) at Bellevue in Manhattan.
Overview The OTxHU is a pioneering program that bridges care between NYC jails and inpatient hospitalization. Candidates will provide mental health care to incarcerated individuals and coordinate with correctional staff and other institutional services.
Responsibilities
Conduct mental health evaluations, crisis intervention, assessments, and follow-up care.
Collaborate on determining disposition of patients for an appropriate level of mental health care.
Coordinate with Reentry Social Workers for appropriate discharge planning services.
Complete required statistical reports and all required documentation.
Collaborate with the Department of Correction to ensure access to patients, proper housing, and treatment disposition.
Coordinate patient care with other institutional services and programs.
Facilitate or co‑facilitate leading mental health group treatment.
Participate in clinical supervision with the Clinical Supervisor at least once a week.
Participate in mental health and medical rounds as assigned.
Participate in case conferences and treatment planning for patients receiving or being considered for mental health treatment.
May conduct psychological testing as assigned, under supervision.
May supervise social work interns or student volunteers as assigned.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Senior/Clinical Supervisor.
Minimum Qualifications
Valid license and current registration to practice as a Mental Health Counselor issued by NYSED.
Two (2) years of full‑time, paid, professional experience providing direct client care in a behavioral health setting.
Department Preferences
Excellent diagnostic and treatment skills.
Demonstrated knowledge of psychopathology in assessing patients in need of mental health treatment, including mental status examination and diagnosis.
Excellent interpersonal communication skills and ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team, as well as with NYC DOC staff.
Flexible disposition.
Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) or Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC).
