Position Description Summary
Support LAWA’s Quality Assurance & Construction Inspection Division across multiple projects within LAWA’s Capital Improvement Program.
Current ICC certification as Commercial Mechanical Inspector is required.
Preferred additional ICC certifications as Electrical and Plumbing Inspector.
Provide proof of Cal‑OSHA 30‑hour training within the last four years before assignment.
Hold LAWA SIDA badge prior to official start.
Must be able to work any assigned shift – day, swing, or night – to meet the contractor’s schedule.
Professional Experience Level / Minimum Qualifications
3 + years performing mechanical inspections for building construction.
Thorough knowledge of materials and methods for plumbing, heating, air conditioning and refrigeration installations.
Current ICC Certification as a Commercial Mechanical.
Proof of Cal‑OSHA 30‑hour training within the last four years.
Fall protection and harness training.
Confined Space Entry Training.
Preferred Qualifications and Experience
Additional current ICC certifications as Electrical and Plumbing Inspector.
NFPA 70E standards training within the last three years.
Training and knowledge of NFPA 70, 70E, and 72.
Journey‑level electrician experience in public works, institutional, commercial, or industrial settings.
Journeyman/master plumbing experience progressing to inspection.
Experience inspecting mechanical systems of large‑scale commercial, industrial, or public buildings.
Experience overseeing compliance with building codes on significant construction projects.
Involvement in complex projects requiring coordination with contractors, engineers, and city officials.
Expertise in identifying and addressing deficiencies to ensure construction meets required standards.
Open to learning the prescriptive items required by the agency.
Strong understanding of diverse code requirements.
Excellent communication and time‑management skills.
Essential Job Duties
Inspect construction of airport improvements and utilities projects to ensure conformance to plans, specifications, contracts, permits, and environmental documents.
Conduct comprehensive daily inspections of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems across building and terminal construction projects, reviewing construction documents including blueprints, shop drawings, submittals, RFIs, and change orders.
Prepare detailed daily inspection reports documenting the WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE, and HOW of all observed construction activities.
Verify contractor compliance with local and national electrical codes (NEC, NFPA 70, 70E, 72), mechanical and plumbing codes, and LAWA‑specific standards.
Track and document time‑and‑material work, field changes, and job quantities.
Assist in validating contractor progress payment requests based on an approved schedule of values.
Support special inspections and testing activities, coordinating with engineers, contractors, and third‑party agencies.
Perform Inspections of MEP Installations
Domestic water and sewage systems
Venting, fire sprinklers, and gas piping
HVAC systems (air handlers, chillers, boilers, ductwork)
Smoke control systems
Mechanical ventilation and exhaust
Fire and life safety integration (e.g., smoke dampers)
Mechanical and plumbing shutdowns, lockout/tagout procedures
Commissioning and balancing reports
Underground utilities and duct banks
High‑voltage switchgear and electrical panels
Conduit racks, conductors, and grounding systems
Interior and exterior lighting systems
Fire life safety systems (smoke/heat detectors and FM‑200 suppression systems)
Electrical shutdowns, lockout/tagout procedures, and breaker coordination
Inspect IT Infrastructure Installations
Low‑voltage systems (voice/data, security, access control)
Door card readers, security cameras, and public address (PA) systems
Communication cabling and equipment rooms
Hardware/Software Knowledge
Project management information software (Microsoft Office, Outlook, Excel, Word, PM Web, Adobe Pro, Bluebeam, etc.)
Computer proficiency to review and utilize electronic contract documents efficiently with minimal supervision.
Education / Training
High school diploma (equivalent)
