Base Pay Range $147,000.00/yr - $156,000.00/yr
Mechanical Inspector – Work Location: Los Angeles, CA The Mechanical Inspector will support LAWA's Quality Assurance & Construction Inspection Division across multiple projects within LAWA's Capital Improvement Program.
Position Description Summary
Applicants must possess a current ICC certification as Commercial Mechanical Inspector.
Preferred: additional ICC certifications as Electrical and Plumbing Inspector.
Must provide Proof of Cal-OSHA 30‑hour training within last 4 years.
Must have LAWA SIDA badge prior to official start.
Must be able to work any assigned shift – day, swing or night.
Professional Experience Level/Minimum Qualifications
3+ years performing mechanical inspections for building construction.
Thorough knowledge of materials and methods for plumbing, heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration installations.
Current ICC Certification as a Commercial Mechanical Inspector.
Proof of Cal‑OSHA 30‑hour training within last 4 years.
Fall protection and harness training.
Confined space entry training.
Hardware / Software Knowledge
Knowledge of Project Management Information Software used for inspection/document control (e.g., Microsoft Office, Outlook, Excel, Word, PM Web, Adobe PDF, Bluebeam).
Computer proficiency for reviewing and utilizing electronic contract documents (change orders, submittals, RFIs, etc.) with minimal supervision.
Education / Training
High school diploma (equivalent).
Preferred Qualifications and Experience
Additional current ICC certifications as Electrical and Plumbing Inspector.
NFPA 70E training within last 3 years preferred.
Training/knowledge of NFPA 70, 70E, 72 preferred.
Electrician experience at journeyman/master level focused on installation/repair of electrical systems.
Plumbing experience at journeyman/master level with progression into inspection.
Experience inspecting mechanical systems in large‑scale commercial, industrial or public buildings.
Experience overseeing compliance with building codes on significant construction projects.
Involvement in complex projects requiring coordination with multiple stakeholders.
Strong understanding of diverse code requirements.
Excellent communication and time‑management skills.
Open to learning prescriptive items required by the agency.
Essential Job Duties
Inspect construction of airport improvements and utilities projects to ensure compliance with plans, specifications, contracts, permits, environmental documents, and agreements.
Conduct daily inspections of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems across building and terminal construction projects; interpret construction documents and manage RFIs, change orders.
Prepare comprehensive daily inspection reports documenting activities, identifying deficiencies or safety concerns.
Verify contractor compliance with local and national codes (NEC, NFPA 70, 70E, 72) and LAWA standards.
Track and document time‑and‑material work, field changes, and job quantities.
Assist in validating contractor progress payment requests against approved schedule of values.
Support special inspections and testing activities, coordinating with engineers, contractors, and third‑party agencies.
Perform Inspections of MEP Installations
Domestic water and sewage systems
Venting, fire sprinklers, gas piping
HVAC systems (air handlers, chillers, boilers, ductwork)
Smoke control systems
Mechanical ventilation and exhaust
Fire and life safety integration (e.g., smoke dampers)
Mechanical and plumbing shutdowns; lockout/tagout procedures
Commissioning and balancing reports
Underground utilities and duct banks
High‑voltage switchgear and electrical panels
Conduit racks, conductors, and grounding systems
Interior and exterior lighting systems
Fire life safety systems (smoke/heat detectors, FM‑200 suppression)
Electrical shutdowns; lockout/tagout; breaker coordination
Inspect IT Infrastructure Installations
Low‑voltage systems (voice/data, security, access control)
Door card readers, security cameras, public address systems
Communication cabling and equipment rooms
Element‑Specific Requirements/Notes
May assume other duties as required.
Work various shifts: day, swing, night.
Open to modified schedules, including nights and weekends.
Availability to work overtime as needed.
