Utility Maintenance Mechanic I – Water Distribution (Meter Group)
City of Norfolk Department of Utilities is seeking a qualified candidate for a Utility Maintenance Mechanic I in our Water Distribution Division. The role performs preventative maintenance and repairs on residential and commercial water meters in the City’s water system.
Essential Functions
Perform repairs, replacements, readings, and maintenance of residential and commercial water meters.
Connect, disconnect water service, remove and install meters and meter boxes, and repair supply lines and valves.
Notify customers in person or via city‑issued cell phone to complete work‑order complaints.
Complete service work orders electronically using a city‑issued iPad.
Report major system disruptions, leaks, and failures; respond to customer complaints, answer questions regarding water services, and verify meter readings.
Work on‑call night shift and weekends as scheduled.
Education & Experience
High school diploma or equivalent.
One year in machinery repair or maintenance, or successful completion of a City apprenticeship program.
Additional Requirements
Valid driver's license required.
Work Hours Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
Work Location Utilities Combined Operation Center, 1316 Ballentine Boulevard, Norfolk, Virginia
Notes This position is designated as an Essential position and may require extended, rotating, night, weekend, and holiday work in response to severe weather and emergencies.
