Work Schedule

Work Schedule 40‑hour work week. Employee may be required to work nonstandard hours and on weekends to support scheduled laboratory class delivery.

Duties And Tasks

Performs all tasks relating to the leading, management, and supervision of full‑ and part‑time science laboratory technicians to include approving time‑cards and leave requests

Developing work schedules to ensure proper science laboratory support

Ensures all science laboratory technicians are properly trained on all aspects of science laboratory operations, equipment, policies, and procedures

Acts as the primary point of contact for all questions and concerns relating to any of the 10 science laboratories

Collaborates with science faculty to determine faculty needs

Writes science laboratory policies and procedures

Performs all functions pertaining to ordering, procuring, and storing science laboratory equipment and supplies to include the use of a purchase card and eVA, and the monitoring the both science laboratory and P‑14 laboratory technician budgets.

Ensures Standard Operating Procedures and protocols are maintained and followed by science faculty, laboratory staff, and students.

Orders laboratory materials for all science disciplines and performs reconciling and data and cost analysis activities

Acts as the campus Chief Hygiene Office for all 10 physical and life science laboratories.

Makes regular requests from employees for updates and input on college decisions and shares feedback with administrators for inclusion in the NOVA Brief and other relevant documents.

Special Assignments May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

KSA's/Required Qualifications

Ability to lead, supervise, and manage a diverse group of science laboratory technicians and work collaboratively with a disparate group of science faculty.

Ability to set up first and second year laboratories for all science disciplines and to train science laboratory technicians and faculty to do the same.

Demonstrates a high level of knowledge in matters pertaining to laboratory organization, operation, equipment, materials, protocols, procedures, and policies in an academic setting, and an ability to clearly explain science laboratory goals and demonstrate science laboratory techniques.

Possesses extensive and comprehensive knowledge and understanding of laboratory safety practices in an academic setting, Safety Data Sheets, OSHA standards pertaining to science laboratories in an academic setting, personal protection equipment, chemical and hazardous material assessment and abatement, and chemical and hazardous material waste storage and management.

Knowledge in basic laboratory equipment inspection and repair

Basic computer skills: Microsoft Windows, word procession, spreadsheets, and data management

Possesses excellent organizational and communication skills

Ability to work some evenings and weekends as needed

Minimum Qualifications

Experience in a scientific or health science discipline

Experience managing science laboratory staff

Experience working in a science laboratory environment

Experience with Microsoft office

Customer service experience

Additional Considerations

Experience working in a physical and/or life science laboratory in a college laboratory setting.
