What You’ll Do

As our Expansion Planning Engineer Co-op, you’ll take on impactful projects that sharpen your technical skills and expand your career opportunities. You’ll help analyze and model scenarios that guide MISO’s long-term planning, from integrating large loads to developing weather-dependent planning strategies. You’ll Gain Hands-on Experience With Power system modeling tools such as PSS®E, EMS, and Python Real-world projects like large load integration and weather-driven planning scenarios Cross-functional collaboration, connecting your work to MISO’s broader system reliability mission A Great Day In This Role Means

Working alongside your manager, mentor, and a cross-departmental “buddy” to analyze future system needs, develop planning scenarios, and contribute directly to studies that influence grid expansion decisions. You’ll know you’re making an impact when your recommendations support the planning of infrastructure that will reliably serve millions of people. This Is a Unique Opportunity Because You’ll contribute to long-term system planning that directly impacts future grid reliability You’ll collaborate with professionals across MISO, learning how expansion planning connects to operations, markets, and policy You’ll gain professional development opportunities through interactive lunch & learns, social events, and community service projects What You’ll Be Proud To Share Supported MISO’s Expansion Planning team by analyzing scenarios and large load impacts that informed future transmission planning Developed hands-on expertise with planning and modeling tools (Python, PSS®E, EMS) Presented findings and recommendations in a spotlight presentation to department leaders and executives By The End Of Your Co-op, You’ll Walk Away With A tangible impact story (e.g., “My study identified planning scenarios that influenced long-term grid expansion strategy”) Stronger technical and analytical skills in system modeling and planning A deeper understanding of expansion planning and its role in grid reliability Expanded professional network across MISO and the energy industry A résumé-ready bullet such as: “Contributed to long-term expansion planning studies for MISO, supporting grid reliability and resilience for 45 million people.” Qualifications
