Description Responsible for journey level work in the maintenance and repair of light, medium, and heavy gasoline and diesel driven motorized equipment used in County operations. Performs skilled and semi‑skilled tasks in the care and maintenance of buildings, facilities and grounds; performs sanitation duties.

Essential Functions

Maintains and repairs roadways and other paved areas by cleaning surfaces, laying and raking asphalt, and marking pavement.

Mows, trims, edges, fertilizes, waters parks and landscaped areas; weeds, prunes, mulches, fertilizes, sprays trees, plants and shrubbery; prepares soil, seeds, re‑sods lawn, plants trees, seedlings & shrubs; applies pesticides & fertilizers.

Installs, repairs and maintains irrigation systems; adjusts, repairs and replaces timing mechanisms; reads & interprets plans, specs, blueprints & schematics; prepares as‑built sketches.

Performs set‑ups & tear‑downs for special events; installs & removes banners & decorations.

Performs commercial & residential trash collection.

Performs custodial duties: sweeps, mops, scrubs & polishes floors; vacuums carpeted areas; dusts & polishes furniture, woodwork, counters; washes doors, windows & walls; cleans restrooms; restocks supplies.

Cleans lighting fixtures and replaces bulbs/tubes.

Empties, cleans & lines waste receptacles; disposes of trash.

Performs basic building repair, may paint facilities & remove graffiti; maintains drinking fountains.

Maintains vehicles, equipment, supplies in proper condition.

Observes safe working practices; keeps storage areas safe.

Communicates openly with coworkers & management via cell phones.

Answers public questions & provides standard information.

Offers suggestions to improve unit's service; participates actively in work teams.

Completes records of work performed & materials used using software (Word, Excel); submits timesheets on time.

Drives a County motor vehicle to specified work sites; may operate a bucket truck.

Represents the County with dignity, integrity & cooperation in all relationships.

Qualifications To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

Education and Experience High School diploma/GED; AND one (1) year of custodial/maintenance; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Knowledge and Skills

General building & facility maintenance & repair methods.

Pavement maintenance & repair practices.

Operation, capability & maintenance of various trucks & light construction equipment.

Cement construction techniques, pouring & finishing.

Safe cleaning methods & use of disinfectants & custodial tools.

Use & minor maintenance of hand & power tools.

Safety practices & equipment related to the work.

Basic shop mathematics.

Basic record keeping & knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).

Basic public‑relations skills.

Certifications and Licenses

Current valid Class B Driver’s License with air‑brake endorsement (or obtainable within 1 year).

CPR and First Aid certification within 6 months of employment.

OSHA 10 certification within 6 months of employment.

Physical Demands & Working Environment Typical shop or maintenance setting; uses hand & power tools, office equipment, drives motor vehicle; stamina to stand, walk, climb, work in confined spaces; strength to lift up to 100 lbs; vision & hearing to communicate. Exposure to extreme weather, hazardous chemicals, electrical currents, gases, dust and noxious odors.

Conditions of Employment

Continued employment contingent upon maintaining all required licenses/certificates in active status.

Employment contingent upon successful background screening.

Douglas County participates in E‑Verify and will require Form I‑9 proof of work authorization before starting employment.

Compensation & Benefits

0‑3% merit increase upon successful completion of probation; 0‑3% annual merit increases thereafter based on evaluation score.

No Nevada state income tax.

Retirement: Nevada Public Employee Retirement System (PERS) – 36.75% employer‑paid; no FICA contribution for employees; County pays 100% of retirement account.

Vacation: 120 hours per year (increase with years of service).

Sick leave: 96 hours per year.
