NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is one of the largest healthcare systems in the UK employing around 40,000 staff in a wide range of clinical and non‑clinical professions and job roles. We deliver acute hospital, primary, community and mental health care services to a population of over 1.15 million and a wider population of 2.2 million when our regional and national services are included.

Shift pattern for this post is Monday to Friday 0900 - 1700

This is a Fixed term post for 6 months

The successful applicant will be part of NHS GGC Children’s and Young People’s Diabetes Service (CYPDS) which is the largest paediatric diabetes service in the United Kingdom, caring for over 875 patients up to the age of 18 years. 100‑120 new patients are diagnosed each year with a variety of diabetes types. The service supports medical transfers and consults from throughout Scotland and is a standalone service, independent of the Department of Endocrinology.

The CYPDS is currently based in the West Glasgow Ambulatory Care Hospital, formerly the Royal Hospital for Sick Children, Yorkhill, before it was replaced in 2015 by the Royal Hospital for Children, Govan. The department provides administrative support, routine and rapid‑access clinics, teaching and training for patients with diabetes from birth to 18 years of age.

Care is provided by a large multi‑disciplinary team, including medical, nursing and dietetic staff, departmental administrator and database manager. To date, the service has on‑boarded over 75% of patients onto Hybrid Closed Loop (HCL) Pumps, making it the largest Paediatric HCL service in the UK. In Scotland, all patients with diabetes have a computer record on a national clinical database (SCI‑Diabetes), allowing regular review of local figures and national comparisons with rigorous continuous audit to improve outcomes.

The post is to primarily support in‑patient diabetes care with a requirement to review hospital‑based patients each morning, Monday to Friday. Additional support is required for patients with diabetes on the Intensive Care, Haematology and Oncology, Gastroenterology, Neonatology, Renal, Respiratory and Surgical wards. The service is a tertiary centre, receiving patients referred from other Scottish paediatric centres. General Paediatric colleagues share inpatient care of diabetes patients, providing after‑hours support Monday to Friday, weekends and public holidays. Additional duties will include out‑patient diabetes clinics and unit cover, supporting the service MDT. These duties will be discussed and organised with the successful applicant.
