Summary The Clinical Staff Nurse functions as a champion of quality patient care and a professional caregiver who demonstrates critical thinking skills and scientific judgment in anticipation and planning for patient care. The CSN performs at a competent level of nursing and consistently demonstrates the nursing process, including assessment, diagnosis, identification of outcomes, planning, implementation, coordination of care, teaching, health promotion and evaluation. The CSN upholds the highest standards of professional performance, including ethics, cultural diversity, communication, collaboration, evidence‑based practice, nursing research, quality, resource utilization and environmental health. The CSN functions within the JHS CARE Model, being accountable for planning, implementing, evaluating and communicating all phases of nursing care for assigned patients. The CSN possesses clinical knowledge and skills to meet standards required by specific clinical areas.
Responsibilities
Implement and coordinate delivery of care in collaboration with physicians, other providers and healthcare staff.
Utilize the nursing process (assessment, planning, implementation, evaluation) in applying nursing knowledge.
Document all pertinent information regarding nursing care, care plans and observations.
Account for narcotics and emergency equipment on each tour of duty.
Maintain a working knowledge of facility infection control procedures.
Recognize, question and report significant patient findings and/or inconsistencies in medical/nursing orders or treatment regimes.
Collaborate and seek corrective action.
Select and individually update and adhere to clinical procedures, protocols, standards, clinical pathways, plans of care, narcotics policies and discharge/teaching plans.
Complete and submit patient/unit charges.
Recognize and prioritize overt and convert unit needs/problems, implementing corrective action independently.
Assume charge nurse role when assigned, supervise designated personnel and take action as needed.
Apply logic and reasoning to identify strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions and approaches to problems.
Provide functional direction and assistance to LPNs, CNAs and MAs, and complete new staff orientation as assigned.
Make rounds on a timely basis to ensure continuity of care.
Maintain HIPAA compliance at all times.
Follow and perform all related unit‑specific policies and procedures, as detailed on the unit competency check‑list.
Utilize job‑ and unit‑specific equipment as required.
Demonstrate behaviors of service excellence and CARE values (Compassion, Accountability, Respect and Expertise).
Perform all other related job duties as assigned.
Experience Generally requires 1 to 3 years of related experience.
Education
Associate's degree in Nursing is required.
BSN degree is preferred.
Any employee who will be performing point‑of‑care and testing in the operating room, neuro‑ICU, NICU, PICU, pedi‑ER, cath lab and/or interventional radiology areas must have the educational degree verified at the time of hire. Minimum education level required to be verified is Associate's degree.

Credentials
Valid Florida RN license is required.
American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) and any additional applicable life‑support certification for healthcare providers required upon hire with at least 6 months validity and maintenance at JHS for the duration of employment.
Must meet and maintain current all unit‑specific and organizational skills/competencies, certifications/licenses, as required by the nursing area.

Physical Requirements Job function requires extended standing or walking. Must be able to carry objects weighing 21 to 50 pounds. Able to lift or move objects weighing 51 to 100 pounds with the use of appropriate devices. Jobs in this group require frequent visual acuity to perform activities related to extended use of computers.
Environmental Conditions Jobs in this group are required to function in a fast‑paced environment with occasional high pressure or emergent and stressful situations. Frequent interaction with a diverse population including team members, providers, patients, insurance companies and other members of the public. Function is subject to indoor environmental conditions, with occasional outdoor exposures. Exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, medicinal preparations and other conditions common to a hospital and medical office environment.
