Salary (A‑E Steps)

Social Worker IV(A):

$30.43 - $36.99 Hourly / $2,434.40 - $2,959.20 Biweekly

Social Worker IV(B):

$31.19 - $37.91 Hourly / $2,495.20 - $3,032.80 Biweekly

What Will You Do? The primary function of an Adoption Social Worker is to provide direct adoption services for prospective adoptive parents, adoptive parents and children in the Child Welfare System that need permanent homes or that have been adopted. The work is conducted in the field as well as in the office writing reports with time‑sensitive, legal and agency deadlines.

As a Social Worker you will have the opportunity to:

Handle difficult adoption casework tasks, working independently with county welfare departments, community partners, attorneys, judges and other representatives of the court system;

Interview adoptive parents and children to obtain information on personal issues in difficult or emotional situations;

Maintain contact to monitor the progress of the child and family through the entire process;

Interact with families to assess, identify needs and make appropriate referrals to services;

Make decisions and prepare full factual reports to the court with recommendations for or against granting petitions for adoption and recommend alternate plans when needed;

Complete the many various forms required for the finalization of the adoption;

Explain decisions or recommendations to family members;

Handle different issues that may arise after adoptions are finalized;

Prepare reports to an Adoptions Supervisor and/or Program Manager.

Controversial Issues You may be required to take actions that conflict with your own values. A Social Worker must be able to accept customers’ differences and interact with them in a non‑judgmental manner.

Minimum Qualifications Social Worker IV A

Pattern 1:

A Master’s degree in Social Work from an accredited college or university;

Pattern 2:

A Master’s degree from an accredited two‑year counseling program*;

Pattern 3:

One year of full‑time experience performing advanced journey (equivalent to an MSS SW III) level social work case management as a Social Worker in a public or private agency and a Master’s degree in social or behavioral science, psychology, anthropology, sociology and counseling education.

*Qualifying counseling degrees from a two‑year counseling program includes: Marriage and Family Therapy, Clinical Counseling, Mental Health Counseling, Addiction Counseling, Gerontology, Counseling Psychology.

Social Worker IV B

Pattern 1: A Master’s degree in Social Work from an accredited college or university and one year of full‑time experience performing social work case management as a Social Worker in a public or private agency;

Pattern 2: A Master’s degree from an accredited college or university two‑year counseling program* and one year of full‑time experience performing social work case management as a Social Worker in a public or private agency;

Pattern 3: Two years of full‑time experience performing advanced journey (equivalent to an MSS SW III) level social work case management as a Social Worker in a public or private agency and a Master’s degree in social or behavioral science, psychology, anthropology, sociology and counseling education.

*Qualifying counseling degrees from a two‑year counseling program includes: Marriage and Family Therapy, Clinical Counseling, Mental Health Counseling, Addiction Counseling, Gerontology, Counseling Psychology.

Additional Requirements

Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade.

Valid California driver’s license.

In addition, Tehama County is establishing an eligibility list to fill future vacancies for a Social Worker IV A/B – Adoptions (Merit), as well as subsequent vacancies, which occur during the life of the eligibility list.

New employees should anticipate being hired at the beginning step of the salary range. Candidates who exceed entry level qualifications may be considered, with approval from the Board of Supervisors, for placement at other than A step.
