(ADOT) is seeking an Accountant 1 in Arizona. Join a collaborative team driving a safer transportation system.
Location: 800 W. Washington St., Phoenix, AZ 85007.
Salary: $54,751.12 - $64,751.12 (anticipated $59,751.12). Grade: 19. Closing Date: 11/12/2025.
This position is responsible for performing defined accounting tasks such as processing deposits, reviewing remote deposits, inter‑agency transfers, intra‑agency transfers, encumbrance entries, and correction entries to properly document the fiscal activities of the agency. The role examines financial transactions for completeness, accuracy, and conformance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), assists with reconciling monthly transactions, and compiles data and schedules to ensure accurate and timely reporting for presentation and analysis of the agency’s financial condition. The accountant resolves questions and problems for internal and external customers, public constituents, and identifies actions to address issues, including coordinating with other ADOT groups and functions. Procedural reviews and updates are also performed.
Remote work may be available within Arizona (two (2) days per week in the office).
Key duties include:
Make fiscal entries and revisions to agency accounts and financial records via the automated accounting system.
Review and verify fiscal documents for accuracy, timeliness, and proper utilization of accounting codes, transaction types, and funds.
Correct accounting codes on fiscal documents ensuring accuracy.
Research, problem‑solve, and make decisions on financial matters from internal and external customers.
Assist employees from all areas as a source of financial information and interpretation.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):
Apply GAAP to understand differences between various fund types and their application to the general ledger.
Classify receipts, expenditures, and balance sheet accounts.
Record journal entries for the department.
Reconcile revenue, expenditure, and balance sheet accounts.
Use automated accounting systems for transfers and corrections.
Proficient in Microsoft Excel (macros, data validation, formulas, functions).
Experience with Google Suite.
Skills:
Analysis, interpretation, and communication of financial data.
Work prioritization, organization, and time management.
Attention to detail and accuracy.
Oral and written communication.
Documenting thoughts clearly and persuasively.
Data entry into the automated accounting system (AZ360).
Abilities:
Communicate and relate effectively with counterparts in other areas and government entities.
Analyze and logically reason numerical concepts.
Use Excel for data interpretation (macros, data validation, formulas, functions).
Critical thinking and systematic problem solving.
Work independently and collaboratively.
Professional communication in writing and verbally.
Understand customer and stakeholder concerns.
Handle unexpected workload effectively.
Selective Preference(s):
Bachelor’s degree in accounting from an accredited college or university OR a bachelor’s degree in a related field with a minimum of 24 semester hours of accounting courses OR relevant work experience. Experience with automated accounting systems, Excel, and analytical tools is preferred.

This position requires driving or use of a vehicle. Applicants must possess a current valid driver’s license, complete required training, and pass driver’s license record checks. Motor vehicle operators must maintain required liability insurance.
