Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic – U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs

Location: Battle Creek, MI

Base pay range: $27.39/hr – $31.92/hr

Summary

The Battle Creek VA Medical Center is recruiting for an Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic. The position will function under the Facilities Management Service.

Qualifications

  • Evidence of training or experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties must be supported by detailed descriptions on your resume.
  • Applicants will be rated against OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.
  • Screen‑out element will be evaluated first; eligible candidates then rated against Job Elements such as Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair, Interpret Instructions, Specifications, Troubleshooting, Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment.
  • Volunteer experience (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps, professional or community organizations) will be credited if it demonstrates relevant competencies.
  • Applicants must indicate clearly the nature of duties and the number of hours per week for each position.

Duties

  • Perform routine preventive maintenance and repairs on HVAC and refrigeration systems throughout the VAMC.
  • Receive specific assignments or oral instructions from the Mechanical Maintenance Supervisor.
  • Assist with complex aspects of the position when required.
  • Perform troubleshooting using appropriate testing equipment.
  • Maintain, install, and repair a wide variety of refrigeration and air conditioning equipment, including domestic refrigerators, freezers, condensers, water coolers, air filters, ventilation equipment, refrigerated medical equipment, and evaporative coolers.
  • Diagnose problems and take corrective action such as replacing compressor parts, condensers, controls, thermostats, pressure stats, relays, switches, and pneumatic controls.
  • Make necessary inspections and repairs of evaporators, receivers, seals, expansion or pressure valves, capillary tubes, and pressure and thermostatic controls.
  • Install and fit connecting rods, crank shafts, pistons, rings, bushings, pulleys, belts, fans, and fly wheels.
  • Install or relocate refrigeration and air conditioning equipment and test for leaks.
  • Fabricate small parts or modify parts as needed.
  • Work schedule: Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

Physical Requirements

  • Work primarily indoors but frequently subject to sudden temperature changes.
  • May be exposed to burns, electrical shocks, and respiratory ailments.
  • Exposure to prolonged or concentrated refrigerant gases may cause toxic effects to eyes, skin, and internal organs.
  • Face masks and protective clothing may be required during exposure to toxic refrigerants.
