Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic – U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs
This position is in the Maintenance & Repair section at the VHA New York Harbor Healthcare System – Facility Maintenance Service. Incumbents will be assigned to the St. Albans CLC Campus as a duty station.
Pay Range
Base pay: $42.28/hr – $49.34/hr. The actual pay will be based on skills and experience; discuss the details with a recruiter.
Summary
The Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic Supervisor is responsible for supervising AC mechanics, performing and scheduling all necessary repairs and preventative maintenance on HVAC and refrigeration equipment within the Medical Center and related facilities.
Responsibilities
- Supervise the AC shop and its crew, ensuring effective and efficient operation and maintenance of all HVAC and refrigeration equipment.
- Directly manage repairs, preventative maintenance, and installation of equipment ranging from 1/4‑ton to 3000‑ton systems.
- Diagnose, plan, and complete projects or work orders involving major HVAC systems.
- Maintain accurate documentation of work orders, maintenance metrics, and adherence to safety and quality standards.
- Implement and enforce the Safety and Fire Prevention Program within the section.
- Prepare daily assignments to subordinates, supervise testing, inspection, and documentation of all work performed.
- Ensure compliance with NYHHS policies and VA Handbook 5019 regarding physical requirements and working conditions.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Evidence of training or experience sufficient in scope and quality to perform HVAC and refrigeration duties.
- Proficiency in reading and applying building plans, blueprints, schematics, and maintenance manuals.
- Experience with installation, troubleshooting, and preventative maintenance of HVAC and refrigeration systems, including evaporators, condensers, compressors, and related components.
- Skill in using hand and power tools, shop equipment, and manufacturing tools.
- Operating experience with both air‑cooled and water‑cooled condensers, chillers, and HVAC controls.
- EPA CFC certification (Universal) required.
- Ability to manage multiple projects, plan layouts, and coordinate new construction or remodeling work.
- Strong communication skills, self‑discipline, and a willingness to accept responsibility for assigned crew and projects.
