Under general supervision, operates heavy equipment in refuse disposal at the landfill, including spreading, compaction, covering, and finishing to prescribed grade. Inspects and maintains equipment and ensures a safe environment for customers and employees. Watches for potential hazards for employees and customers. Directs customers to proper dumping areas and informs them of safe waste disposal practices. Ensures that improper or unregulated materials are not disposed of. Performs other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience:
- High School Diploma/GED Certification from an accredited institution and one year of experience in hauling and loading, including operation and preventative maintenance of heavy equipment. Experience working in a solid waste environment is highly desirable.
Required Licenses or Certifications:
- Valid New Mexico Driver’s License and New Mexico Commercial Driver’s License (CDL); Class A preferred.
- Must maintain a current New Mexico CDL medical card.
This position is subject to random alcohol and drug testing in accordance with Department of Transportation (DOT) and Federal Motor Carrier Safety Act (FMCSA) regulations.
Additional Responsibilities:
- Conducts pre-operation inspections of landfill, composting, and recycling equipment; fuels, greases, and completes on-the-spot repairs; reports equipment problems to schedule repairs.
- Operates heavy landfill equipment such as scrapers, dozers, compactors, tandem, roll-off, end dump trucks, tractor trailers, water wagons, graders, and related equipment to load and haul dirt fill, spread and compact debris, and place dirt fill over trash.
- Operates shredder, chipper, mulching equipment, loader, water wagon/truck, and roll-off truck at the composting facility.
- Compiles daily equipment logs and reports as required.
- Identifies fill areas for dumping solid waste; watches for hazardous materials; assists customers at dumping areas and helps with stuck equipment or customers.
- Parks vehicles at transfer stations and dumping areas; conducts customer trash inspections to prevent hazardous materials entry.
- Identifies hazardous waste symbols and safety issues visually.
- Picks up litter and recyclables; directs traffic at the cashier/window; provides customer assistance, pricing, and receipts.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
