Welder III Location
San Diego, CA Job Overview
We are seeking a highly skilled Welder III to join our Fleet Services Group in San Diego. The role supports ship repair, modernization, and alteration installation (AIT) projects for U.S. Navy and commercial maritime clients. The position requires precision, efficiency, and commitment to quality workmanship in both shop and shipboard environments. Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Join, fabricate, and repair metal and other weldable material by applying appropriate welding techniques. Perform various welding processes to repair, modify and install pipes, structures, foundations and fittings for shipboard hydraulic, pneumatic and water systems. Fabricate and install fixtures and jigs required for welding process alignments. Interpret blueprints, specifications, diagrams or schematics to determine appropriate welding process. Select required welding filler materials, joint design, heat ranges and most effective or required welding process/procedure to ensure quality welding operations IAW TWD. Inspect completed welds to determine structural soundness and adherence to NAVSEA, ABS & AWS standards. Install or repair equipment such as pipes, valves, floors and tank linings. Clamp, hold, tack‑weld, heat‑bend, grind or bolt component parts to obtain required configurations and positions for welding. Operate manual or semi‑automatic welding equipment to fuse basic metal segments, using processes such as flux‑cored arc, carbon arc, etc. Weld multiple types, thicknesses & sizes of pipe, plate & bar material in horizontal, overhead and/or vertical positions. Document objective quality evidence to the requisite Continental Tide forms. Demonstrate the ability to estimate a drawing package / installation. Utilize SMAW, GMAW & GTAW, Ship Fitting and OXY ACC & Propane GAS Cutting torch. Provide leadership to technical project teams, oversee scheduling and task execution, and deliver regular updates and briefings to customers and senior leadership. Perform additional duties outside of standard responsibilities as needed to support project completion. Requirements
High school, trade or vocational school degree. 10+ years of direct experience in ship repair and installation of HM&E systems and equipment. Ability to read and interpret ship installation drawings, installation specifications and NAVSEA Standard Items is preferred. Must possess or have the ability to obtain a SECRET clearance. Must be able to obtain base access and security credentials. Travel up to 75% may be required within and outside the continental United States. This role is open to U.S. citizens only due to export control regulations. Possess basic and some advanced specialized welder's tools. Previous welding certifications or ability to obtain welding qualifications may be used in lieu of experience. Must understand, read, and communicate in English as required for job instructions, safety information, and team communication. Physical Requirements
Exposure to open‑air environments, including noisy, hot, and cold conditions. Required to visit project sites aboard ships and rigs, both onshore and offshore. Must wear various types of personal protective equipment (PPE). Site visits may involve standing on a variety of surfaces and angles, bending, crouching, and climbing over obstructions such as scaffolding, ladders, and internal barge or boat structural components. Exposure to sound levels exceeding 100 decibels. Must possess sufficient visual acuity, peripheral vision, depth perception, and night vision to inspect marine components and systems, identify defects or irregularities, and safely operate tools and equipment. May work in confined spaces with limited ventilation. Requires prolonged periods of sedentary work, including sitting and/or standing. May be required to operate machinery, power tools, and/or heavy equipment. Must communicate effectively to exchange and comprehend information. Frequent exposure to extreme weather conditions, including high heat and extreme cold. Must be able to lift and carry 30 lbs. or more, depending on the task requirements.
