Overview The Senior Design Engineer leads the design of commercial and industrial (C&I) solar photovoltaic (PV) projects—including ground‑mount, canopy, and rooftop installations—and energy storage systems. The role covers the full design lifecycle from concept to as‑built drawings, provides construction support, conducts equipment reviews, and drives process improvement. Responsibilities also include project coordination, mentorship of designers and interns, and ensuring code compliance.
Responsibilities
Design canopy, ground‑mount, and rooftop solar projects using AutoCAD, ensuring compliance with NEC codes and permitting requirements.
Create electrical single‑line diagrams for Professional Engineer (PE) review and stamping.
Act as technical lead in internal and external project coordination meetings for new construction and complex projects (greater than 500 kW AC, BESS, EV charging, repowering).
Collaborate with the Regulatory team on utility revisions during the interconnection process.
Develop comprehensive site plans and construction document sets for advanced project development stages, including detailed drawings for equipment pad design/layouts, switchgear elevations, grounding details, inverter racking details, and BESS pad details. Create as‑built construction documents upon project completion.
Generate detailed site plans illustrating equipment pad/locations, transformer pads, trench routes, and point of interconnection details.
Provide technical support to the construction team through project completion.
Resolve RFIs and technical challenges, review submittals, attend weekly construction calls as needed, and support project closeout tasks.
Review and approve equipment drawings and specifications for procurement. Review project drawings for constructability and code compliance.
Support new product and technology research initiatives.
Lead process improvement initiatives.
Develop and manage relationships with vendors and engineering consultants throughout the project lifecycle.
Support training of engineering department personnel and development of design drawing libraries.
Conduct site visits during construction for project assessment.
Perform Helioscope/PVSyst designs and other design/engineering tasks as required.
Mentor and coach Design Engineers and Design Interns.
Qualifications
Minimum 3 years of experience in C&I Solar PV design and engineering.
Minimum 1 year of Energy Storage experience.
Proficiency in creating electrical single‑line diagrams.
Ability to create point‑to‑point diagrams for storage and PV monitoring systems (a plus).
NABCEP PV Design or Installation Certification (preferred).
Proficiency in AutoCAD, Salesforce, Google Suite, and Microsoft Office.
Proficiency in Helioscope and PVSyst (preferred).
Quality‑oriented with strong attention to detail.
Ability to multitask and manage multiple project designs simultaneously with minimal supervision.
Professional and personable demeanor with a willingness to interact with clients, third‑party design professionals, utility representatives, and other team members.
Special Position Requirements
Occasional travel may be required in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut.
Compensation and Benefits Expected starting pay range for this role is $89,000 – $112,000 USD. Base pay may vary based on location, work experience, certifications, and education. In addition to base pay, Pattern’s compensation program includes a bonus structure for full‑time employees of all levels.
