Job Description
Cummins | Cederberg is seeking an Assistant Controller to join our team in Coral Gables. The ideal candidate will be self‑motivating, pro‑active and have a degree in accounting. We are a growing coastal and marine engineering firm with eight offices throughout Florida serving private and public clients.
The Coral Gables office serves as the headquarters for the company.
Job Responsibilities The role includes working with Project Managers and the Controller to ensure accurate and up‑to‑date project reporting and record‑keeping regarding budget, revenue, cost, invoicing, and collections throughout the lifecycle of multiple projects.
Typical Functions
Assigns and opens projects in the accounting system, ensuring PM information aligns with the contract.
Maintains project‑related records, including executed contracts and change orders; files are promptly saved in SharePoint.
Authorizes access to project accounts.
Authorizes the transfer of expenses into and out of project‑related accounts.
Reviews and approves supplier invoices and charges related to a project.
Investigates project variances and submits variance reports to the accounting supervisor.
Collaborates with PMs regarding unpaid invoices.
Reports on project profitability.
Reports to the accounting supervisor regarding the remaining backlog available for projects.
Closes out project accounts upon project completion.
Creates and submits government reports and tax returns related to projects.
Compiles information for internal and external auditors, as required.
Reviews project budgets, including staffing, work plans, and fee structures.
Provides project managers and clients with timely financial reports and budgets, as well as project forecasts.
Prepares pre‑billing reports for project managers to review.
Monitors receivable income and supports project managers with collections.
Sets up consultants, ensuring sub‑consultant agreements, NDAs, certificates of insurance and licenses are in place, if applicable.
Issues invoices and pays consultant, subcontractor, vendor, and supplier bills.
Ensures a steady cash flow by generating, auditing, and sending invoices in a timely manner.
Updates contracts according to client requirements and reports associated budget amendments.
Competencies
Proficient in the full suite of Microsoft Office software.
Experience with accounting software such as Deltek Vantagepoint or similar.
Organized and detail‑oriented; able to manage multiple tasks and interdepartmental reporting needs.
Self‑motivated with excellent time management and organizational skills, thriving in a fast‑paced team environment.
Excellent internal and external customer service skills and a collaborative spirit.
Preferred Education and Experience
4‑year accounting or related degree with 10 years of experience.
Experience in cost accounting or project accounting within the AEC industry.
