Position Summary The Director of Hospitality is responsible for creating a warm, welcoming, and inclusive environment for all congregants, guests, and prospective members. This role oversees all aspects of synagogue hospitality, including Shabbat and holiday meals, lifecycle events, special programs, rentals, and day-to-day guest experience. The Director ensures that all interactions reflect the synagogue’s values of kindness, connection, and community.
Key Responsibilities 1. Event Planning and Execution
Lead and manage synagogue-wide events including Shabbat dinners, holiday celebrations, receptions, and lifecycle gatherings
Liaise with clergy, program staff, and lay leaders on logistics, room setup, and guest experience
Use event-management software to create proposals, menus, BEOs, contracts, and invoices
Ensure kosher compliance and coordinate closely with kitchen staff
Communicate with congregants about lifecycle event needs
Oversee partner and rental events
2. Volunteer Engagement and Community Experience
Recruit, train, and support volunteers who serve as greeters, ushers, and hosts for services and programs
Develop systems that make the synagogue’s hospitality culture visible and consistent
Build relationships with congregants, ensuring their needs are met with care and responsiveness
3. Catering, Kitchen, and Vendor Oversight
Oversee kitchen operations, catering coordination, and vendor relationships
Ensure compliance with health, safety, and kashrut standards
Manage contracts, invoices, and budgets related to food service, rentals, and event supplies
Develop and maintain systems for kitchen usage and event scheduling to avoid conflicts and maximize efficiency
4. Administrative and Budget Oversight
Develop and manage the annual hospitality budget
Track expenses, usage, and inventory
Partner with communications staff to promote events
Contribute to planning for major events and facility needs
5. Staff and Operational Coordination
Supervise and schedule service staff
Partner with maintenance teams to ensure spaces are properly prepared for all events
Collaborate with clergy and staff to ensure the hospitality experience supports the spiritual and programmatic goals of the synagogue
Required Qualifications
3–5+ years of experience in hospitality, events, food service, or nonprofit program coordination
Excellent interpersonal and customer-service skills
Strong organizational and project-management skills
Experience with catering, vendors, or kitchen operations
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in a synagogue or Jewish nonprofit
Knowledge of kosher food service
Experience supervising staff or volunteers
Familiarity with Shabbat and holiday rhythms
Food sanitation or allergen training
Salary & Benefits Salary Range:$80,000 – $90,000 depending on experience
