County of San Diego, Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA) We are currently recruiting for the position of Supervising Nurse. Interviews will take place on Thursdays. Qualifying applicants will be invited via email to schedule an interview and should be prepared to immediately complete background paperwork following the interview.

Supervising Nurses provide professional, specialized nursing care to adult patients in an acute or post‑acute setting and serve as a second level supervisor and first level manager in the nursing series. As a Supervising Nurse, you will provide direction and leadership to nursing personnel in all shifts within a specific location in the facility to ensure an adequate standard of care. This position may act in the absence of the Assistant Director of Nursing or Director of Nursing.

Future Salary Increases

June 2026 – 5.67% increase to base pay (3.5% Across‑the‑Board + 2.17% Market Adjustment)

June 2027 – 5.17% increase to base pay (3% Across‑the‑Board + 2.17% Market Adjustment)

Hourly Rates and Premiums May be eligible for relocation allowance up to $8,000.

Minimum Qualifications

A valid Registered Nurse license issued by the State of California

Current CPR card required at the time of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment

A valid National Provider Identification Number (NPI) required at the time of employment and must be maintained throughout employment

Four (4) years of registered nursing experience, including at least one (1) year in a long‑term care, rehabilitation, geriatric or psychiatric nursing facility, and one (1) year in nursing management

NOTE A bachelor's degree in nursing from an accredited U.S. college or university, or certified foreign studies equivalency may substitute for one (1) year of RN experience. A master’s degree in nursing, public health, hospital administration, business administration or other related fields from an accredited U.S. college or university, or certified foreign studies equivalency may substitute for two (2) years of RN experience. Specialized training in nursing administration and supervision is highly desirable. Substitution cannot be applied to the one (1) year of experience in a long‑term care, rehabilitation, geriatric or psychiatric nursing facility or the one (1) year of experience in nursing management.

Ideal Candidate The ideal candidate will have recent experience in a long‑term care setting; experience supervising a large unit of nurses at various levels; knowledge of standard of care and strong oral and written communication skills; the ability to multi‑task; and knowledge of state and federal nursing requirements.

Interviews and Hiring Process The timeline for this recruitment is outlined below. Please note that dates are approximate and are dependent upon the successful completion of each step of the process.

Job Offer and Background Process begins: Shortly after the interviews.

Pre‑employment Medical Screening: Approximately 3 days following successful background investigation results.

Anticipated Start Date: Start date will be based upon successful completion of medical screening or other mutually agreed upon date.

Condition of Employment As part of the County of San Diego’s pre‑employment process, prospective candidates will undergo a background check (including fingerprinting) and a pre‑employment medical screening prior to beginning County employment. Additional types of background investigations may be conducted based on the job‑related activities of the position. Note: Current County employees may be excluded from additional background screening.

Evaluation Process The names of qualified applicants will be placed on a three (3) month eligible list based on scores received during the evaluation of information contained on their employment applications.
