Mental Health Aide The County of San Diego is now hiring for Mental Health Aide. Interviews will be held on Thursdays. Job offers will be made shortly after interviews. Future Salary Increases

June 2026 – 4.0% increase to base pay (3.5% Across-Board + 0.5% Market Increase)

June 2027 – 3.5% increase to base pay (3.0% Across-Board + 0.5% Market Increase)

In addition to base salary, Mental Health Aides at the San Diego County Psychiatric Hospital earn a 5% location premium. The position is available on either morning (7 a.m. to 7 p.m.) or night (7 p.m. to 7 a.m.) shifts.

Job Summary & Responsibilities Mental Health Aides perform routine, non‑technical, para‑professional work in caring for patients admitted to the San Diego County Psychiatric Hospital. Work includes observing and monitoring the behavior and whereabouts of patients to maintain safety, interacting with patients, providing directions, ensuring appropriate diet, obtaining information from nursing, physicians, and other support services about patient conditions, treatment plans, and suggested activities, conducting and recording vital signs as requested, noting observations of patient behavior, providing environmental rounding, accompanying patients outside the facility for court, tests, treatments or appointments, facilitating group activities, and intervening to calm patients during a crisis.

The San Diego County Psychiatric Hospital is a fast‑paced and challenging work environment providing enormous personal rewards. Required Education and Experience

One year of experience working with mentally ill patients.

Completion of 15 college units from an accredited U.S. college or university, or a certified foreign studies equivalency in nursing, counseling, psychology, sociology, or a closely related behavioral science field, AND six months of experience working with mentally ill patients.

Condition of Employment Prospective candidates will undergo a background check (including fingerprinting) and a pre‑employment medical screening prior to beginning County employment. Additional types of background investigations may be conducted based on the job‑related activities of the position. Current County employees may be excluded from this process.

Evaluation Process Qualified candidates will be placed on a three‑month employment list based on scores received during the evaluation of information contained in their employment and supplemental applications. After initial screening, the application will be reviewed individually to confirm that the information provided is accurate and qualifying.
