Brief Summary of Job Duties The Assistant Resident Director (ARD) is an entry‑level full‑time live‑in position responsible for assisting the Resident Director (RD) with the implementation of the student development program in campus housing at UC Santa Barbara. Under the supervision of the RD, the ARD utilizes a curricular approach and equity mindset as cornerstones of their daily work in facilitating student wellness, development, and belonging in a residential community. The contract term is 12 months (August – July) with the opportunity for a renewal of one additional term. The ARD may be assigned to a community that does not have students residing in the summer, at which time they will perform necessary duties to assist the department with preparing for fall opening and the upcoming academic year.

Assist the RD in implementing a curricular approach for a community ranging from 500 to 1,800 residents.

Provide support in student staff training.

Oversee community development, resident engagement, and curricular initiatives.

Advise the hall/community council consisting of student leaders.

Assist in basic counseling, advising, and referrals for student concerns.

Support student conduct adjudication and address emergencies and crisis situations.

Develop effective working relationships with department and campus colleagues.

Complete a comprehensive, self‑directed professional development plan.

Supervise student staff.

Required Qualifications

1–3 years of experience engaging and leading others in social justice, access, inclusion and equity issues within a campus community.

1–3 years of experience planning and delivering programs that foster student engagement and community development.

1–3 years in a student leadership role on a college or university campus.

1–3 years of experience in basic student/peer advising and counseling.

Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues across a large, multifunctional department.

Comprehensive knowledge of UCSB campus resources and support services.

Knowledge of the day‑to‑day operations of a student housing community.

Knowledge of and/or experience working within a residential curriculum campus.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree.

Experience supervising student staff.

Interest in pursuing a career in Higher Education and/or Student Affairs.

Special Conditions of Employment

Full‑time live‑in position with on‑call responsibilities; contract term is 12 months with potential renewal.

May require night and weekend hours with flexible time off to offset these hours.

Job Functions and Percentages of Time

35% Community Development & Education

Assist the RD in implementing an inclusive educational plan aligned with the residential curriculum.

Operationalize educational and social initiatives to foster belonging, especially among underserved students.

Maintain a visible presence to build trust and address emerging needs.

Oversee Resident Assistant staff and ensure responsible use of funds.

Support student leaders of hall/community council in engaging residents.

Facilitate student staff training and ongoing professional development.

30% Advising & Supervising

Advise council meetings and activities, ensuring inclusivity and accessibility.

Meet with executive leaders to set agendas and address council needs.

Recruit and coordinate student leader elections and onboarding.

Guide on group dynamics, leadership, and teamwork.

Distribute information about campus services and prepare event calendars.

Supervise 8–17 Resident Assistants; oversee desk attendants or garden coordinators as appropriate.

20% Student Conduct & Crisis Response

Assist adjudicating conduct cases and adhere to departmental standards.

Support students with mental health concerns and connect them to resources.

Coordinate with Student Conduct, Social Workers, and other staff.

Mediation of roommate or community conflicts and facilitation of room changes.

10% Departmental Support

Recruit and select student and professional staff.

Communicate with partner departments to support community operations.

Collaborate with Resident Director on issue resolution.

Assist in budget management for programming, council, and staff development.

Evaluate student staff and curricular efforts annually.

Act as liaison between R&CL and campus departments.

Assist in projects during the summer session.

5% Community Safety

Serve on the on‑call team for after‑hours support during breaks, holidays, and closures.

Act as first responder to community and campus crises.

Support campus efforts during special events.
